THE DARKNESS Slam Replacement Bassist Rumors

May 25, 2005

Despite tabloid rumors to the contrary, THE DARKNESS have not replaced their recently departed bassist Frankie Poullain with one of their roadies, reports Xfm Online.

News that bassist Poullain had parted company with the band arrived earlier this week (May 23) with an official statement citing irrevocable “musical differences” as the reason for the spilt.

Since then rumors have been circulating as to who will fill Poullain's shoes (and quite possibly moustache). This morning the tabloids reported that the remaining members of the band have recruited roadie Richard Edwards. A "source" was quoted as saying, "The band really trusts him and as they've got to know him, they've realized what a musical talent he is. He also fits in well and knows them all already. The group didn't want a newcomer."

However a new statement from the band on their official web site has denied that Edwards has got the job, at least not yet. It reads:

"Suggestions that a replacement for Frankie has already been appointed are totally premature. Richie Edwards (Dan's guitar tech, some of you know him as 'Spider') has NOT been confirmed as THE DARKNESS' new bassist.

“He IS a contender — but when a decision has been reached, you'll read it HERE first, not in the newspapers."

THE DARKNESS are currently recording the follow-up to their debut album, "Permission to Land", and singer Justin Hawkins himself is putting the finishing touches to his own debut solo album, "British Whale" (the first single from which will be a cover of the SPARKS' "This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us"). Both are expected to arrive in stores by the end of the year.
