SLAYER's KERRY KING: 'DAVE MUSTAINE Is One Of The Worst Singers In Rock'

October 28, 2004

SLAYER guitarist Kerry King recently spoke to the Belgian webzine ConcreteWeb.be about the group's upcoming studio album and the "Still Reigning" DVD, among other topics. Several excerpts from the interview follow:

ConcreteWeb.be: Again everyone awaits the new full-length album and wonders whether it will be one of complete daring stop-start rhythms, intricate song construction, and — most of all — pure SLAYER-ish powersurge?

Kerry King: "Probably! We have ten to twelve songs worked out musically and there is a lot of great shit on those tapes. We haven't really done a lot with lyrics yet. I kinda think that 'Seasons in the Abyss' was the combination of 'Reign in Blood' and 'South of Heaven'. I think that the next one will be an extension of 'God Hates us All' with Dave [Lombardo] playing, and the last time he played was on 'Seasons', so… Essentially what I am saying is how I think it will evolve, but you never know until it's done."

ConcreteWeb.be: When were and how will it be happening and what is the countdown for us?

Kerry King: "We are touring until Christmas and probably after the holidays we'll get unto it. We have a tentative thing that we might go to Japan in January and that would be great because we haven't toured Japan much on this record. If we do that then that is the last thing before we go into the studio."

ConcreteWeb.be: Any regrets or doubts about just having turned 40?

Kerry King: "I wouldn’t change a thing but I do wish we were more prolific. I took a backseat in the nineties and wasn't really involved, which you can tell by the records that are out. It took so long for them to fucking come out! I had so many hobbies but got rid of all of them, before did 'God Hates Us All', which I think you can tell because it has all that fucking hatred in it."

ConcreteWeb.be: Are you physically treating your body well?

Kerry King: "Not as good as I should but I do my best, I am 40 but still thrash my ass. METALLICA are 40 but don't even headbang anymore. When I saw them at Download [in the U.K.], the only one that went off is Rob [Trujillo, bass] and he is the fish out of water. I love Rob to death, but he doesn't belong in that band he belongs in SUICIDAL [TENDENCIES] or OZZY [OSBOURNE]. James [Hetfield] and Kirk [Hammett], their heads don't move the entire show. Where do these guys come from? They have turned into pop."

ConcreteWeb.be: Let's not talk about [MEGADETH's Dave] Mustaine then?

Kerry King: "Well, I listened to the entire new [MEGADETH] album and it's a piece of crap. I think Mustaine is one of the worst singers in rock ever, and this is not because I have a personal vendetta with him. Whoever told him that he can sing should be shot on the spot!"
