SLAYER Guitarist KERRY KING: 'At The End Of The Day, I'm Still A Metal Fan'

June 29, 2006

Malcolm X Abram of The Beacon Journal recently conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King. A couple of excerpt from the chat follow:

On his belief that real metal's popularity is again on an upswing:

"Six or seven years ago, when GODSMACK and DISTURBED started getting popular, I always thought those bands — especially DISTURBED — are very mediocre. But kids started listening because heavy music was coming around again, and I said, 'Watch when people are tired of DISTURBED and tired of GODSMACK and they start looking for the next level of intensity. They're gonna come right down Slayer Boulevard, or bands like us.' You evolve as a listener and your taste for intense music intensifies."

On the fact that SLAYER doesn't dwell much on its elder statesman status but does consider its responsibility to the music and its fans:

"When I was a kid, I had bands I listened to, and if they put out a record I thought was questionable, I'd be really upset with that band and might not go see them on the next tour, and I try to keep that perspective. Because at the end of the day, I'm still a metal fan. I'm just fortunate enough to make up my own songs with some guys that make me better."
