SKINDRED Singer Blames EARACHE RECORDS For Breakup Of His Previous Band

May 26, 2003

SKINDRED frontman Benji Webbe says that Earache Records is largely to blame for the breakup of his previous group DUB WAR after the release of two full-length albums and several EPs through the label. Once considered to be at the forefront of the U.K. rock movement, DUB WAR split up in January 1998 and reformed shortly thereafter as SKINDRED, with Daniel Pugsley (a.k.a. Danite Pea) replacing DUB WAR bassist Richie Glover.

When asked by Rock Rage in a recent interview why DUB WAR broke up, Benji replied, "Well the reason DUB WAR broke up is because our record company sucked. (laughs) They weren't delivering on all their promises and the way I looked at it was, DUB WAR was a Formula 1 racecar and we got stuck at the starting line. It's very frustrating when you see, no disrespect, but less talented than yourself, go further. We just decided to disband because we were just gonna continue to go round and round in circles. So we shook hands amicably and said, 'It's been fun, boys. See you on the other side sometime.'

"It was just frustrating not being able to move forward," Webbe continued. "We had three years of playing the same clubs and that's because we were on a small label that wasn't prepared to spend the money to move us forward. We came over to play some dates in the U.S. on the Warped Tour, which were really good, but the label just wasn't prepared to back it. They had something great but they just couldn't keep it together."

SKINDRED's Bieler Bros./MCA Records debut, "Babylon" finally received a Stateside release on April 22. SKINDRED will return in to the U.S. in July to resume touring in support of the CD.
