SAMMY HAGAR Says THE CIRCLE Will Do A 'Real' 40-City Tour In 2020: 'I've Got To Do This While I Still Can'

November 21, 2019

During his November 19 appearance at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, veteran rock vocalist Sammy Hagar revealed that THE CIRCLE — his rock supergroup with drummer Jason Bonham (BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION, JASON BONHAM'S LED ZEPPELIN EVENING),guitarist Vic Johnson (THE WABORITAS) and his VAN HALEN and CHICKENFOOT band mate Michael Anthony — will embark on an extensive North American tour in 2020. The trek will mark the longest in years for the 72-year-old singer known as "The Red Rocker."

"I'm going to do a 40-city tour," Hagar said. "I haven't done this in a long time. This year, we made a record ['Space Between'] and I was told, 'You've got to go out and support it.' I don't like to go away and tour, but I love to play shows. The way we [normally] do it with THE CIRCLE, we play a couple shows a month, but I'm going to do 40 cities — a real tour — next year. I'm doubling from what I did this year. I decided that I've got to do this while I still can. There's going to be a day I wake up and go, 'I can't do this no more,' not because I don't want to in my heart, but because my knees, my back, my voice, something's going to say, 'Nope.' It's inevitable for everyone, so I'm going to go ahead and dig in.”

THE CIRCLE's first album of all-original material, "Space Between", was released on May 10 via BMG.

Lyrically and musically, the collection of songs on "Space Between" build from intimate and introspective eye-openers to heart-pumping anthems. The music draws on the band members' substantial careers independently and collaboratively, presenting a veteran act still at the peak of its game.

THE CIRCLE released a concert album, "At Your Service", in 2015. Recorded on tour in 2014, it featured live performances of hits from Hagar's four decades of rock (MONTROSE, solo, VAN HALEN, THE WABORITAS, CHICKENFOOT) as well as classic tracks from the LED ZEPPELIN catalog.

"We play the VAN HALEN stuff as well as VAN HALEN ever played it, we play 'Rock Candy' as good as MONTROSE ever played it," Hagar told Classic Rock in a 2018 interview. "That's a mighty bold statement, but it's a fact. So I thought: 'We've got 20 classic songs from each band, probably more, we don't even need to make a record.' But five years later, here we are, we made a record [of all-original material]."
