'Rock Of Ages' Coming To Toronto

October 16, 2009

According to the Toronto Star, "Rock of Ages" — a stage musical that does with '80s rock anthems what "Mamma Mia!" did with ABBA tunes — will start an open-ended run at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in May 2010.

The show is propelled by signature '80s rock anthems popularized by JOURNEY, TWISTED SISTER, JOAN JETT, PAT BENATAR, FOREIGNER, BON JOVI and REO SPEEDWAGON.

A source high in the show's New York organization revealed that Mirvish Productions will present the show in association with the consortium of nearly two dozen producers who opened it on Broadway on April 7 of this year.

It's expected that most, if not all, of the cast will be Canadian, although there is no word yet whether there will be an attempt to duplicate New York's stunt casting of "American Idol" favorite Constantine Maroulis in the leading role.

The producers described the musical as such: "It's the late 1980s and the final countdown is on for a legendary Hollywood rock club facing its demise at the hands of eager developers. When a young rocker hungry for his big break and a small town girl chasing her dreams land on the scene at this infamous venue, how far will ambition drive them? And will it be lights out for the club and all the regulars and rockers who have made it their home?"
