Review: Nostalgic Fans Take Devotion To EXTREME at Reunion Show

Christopher Blagg of BostonHerald.com reviewed EXTREME's June 30 reunion show at Boston's Bank of America Pavilion. An excerpt from his write-up follows:

It became apparent early on that the vast majority of fans (a group skewing heavily toward the 40-something demographic) did not just come to scream lustily along to the ubiquitous hit ballad "More Than Words". Even obscure album cuts got the singalong treatment, beginning with the VAN HALEN carbon-copy opener, "Decadence Dance".

Frontman Gary Cherone immediately fell into his glam-rock mode, preening and posing between verses and leaping off the drum risers with adolescent ease. The wiry singer proved to still possess some extremely elastic and powerful pipes, exhibited on the booming chorus of "Rest in Peace" and the moody riffage of "Tell Me Something I Don't Know".

That said, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt received the most hysterical adulation, his hands dancing all over the fret board in an attempt to squeeze as many notes in a single bar as possible. His nimble speed work on "Play With Me" caused Guitar World subscribers thronging the Pavilion to assume the fawning "we're not worthy" position.
