Review: Energy Lacking From DEFTONES' Performance In Montreal

November 27, 2003

Bernard Perusse of The Gazette reviewed the DEFTONES' show at the Verdun Auditorium Tuesday night (Nov. 25).

"That cat-caught-in-a-breadmaker scream, which brings us most of the anger inherent in the DEFTONES' sound, will surely land vocalist-guitarist Chino Moreno in the hospital if he doesn't start pacing himself," he wrote. "And yet that element is not expendable. When a disappointed fan leaned over and said 'Not much energy, is there?', he was right: even the body surfing seemed a little half-hearted. But the DEFTONES' music is not so much about energy as it is about expressing rage and impotence. So where are they without the scream?

"Yet for all the group's reading of the teenage zeitgeist, there's a problem: a nagging, numbing sameness that seems to bring down all their songs. To make matters worse, all the sonic edges and subtleties turned to sludge in the cavernous echo of the Verdun Auditorium, surely one of the worst concert venues in Montreal. As the air grew fouler with stale cigarette smoke and flat swill that was once beer, even fans seemed unsure at times where one song ended and the next started." Read more.
