QUARTZ: Anthology Details Revealed

February 4, 2004

Sanctuary Records will release an anthology double-CD set from Birmingham heavy metal band QUARTZ this spring.

Disc one comprises the entire 1977 Tony Iommi-produced "Quartz" album, including tracks featuring Iommi on lead guitar and "Sugar Rain", where the SABBATH riffmeister donates a flute solo. Added are eight bonus 7" single b-sides and unreleased demo recordings from 1978. The track "Back In The Band" was only included on the "Muthas Pride" EMI compilation album and was written by guitarist Geoff Nicholls about Ozzy's return to SABBATH for the "Never Say Die" album.

Disc two is the entire "Quartz Live – Count Dracula & Other Love Stories" album. None of these anthology tracks have been included on CD previously.

Considered one of the leading NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) bands, QUARTZ guitarist Mike Hopkins had previously played with John Bonham's WAY OF LIFE while second guitarist Geoff Nicholls would join BLACK SABBATH in 1979. Drummer Malcolm Cope was involved with pre-production for BLACK SABBATH's "Born Again".

Over their career QUARTZ toured heavily — playing the Reading Festival three times ('76, ''77 and '80) — and touring as support to the likes of UFO, IRON MAIDEN, SAXON, GILLAN and RUSH. The band released four albums.
