NONPOINT Covers PANTERA's '5 Minutes Alone'; Audio Available

December 9, 2009

Florida metallers NONPOINT have recorded a version of the PANTERA classic "5 Minutes Alone" as an online bonus track for the forthcoming "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott (PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN) tribute album, which will be released on the cover of the 200th issue of U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine. The CD and the magazine, which will coincide with the five-year anniversary of Dimebag's passing, will be made available on December 16.

Check out NONPOINT's version of "5 Minutes Alone" on the band's MySpace page.

When asked by Metal Hammer what Dimebag meant to him, NONPOINT guitarist Zach Broderick replied, "Dimebag was the epitome of a rock star. Charismatic, humble, amazingly talented, good-hearted. There will never be ANYONE like him. He was a true innovator.

"I grew up watching the PANTERA DVDs every day after school, and I still watch them before almost every show I play to get pumped up. I lived vicariously through someone that enjoyed every second of life, and always made the most out of every day that he walked this earth.

"Five years ago, the world lost a legend, but his spirit, his music, and his everlasting impact that changed heavy music will always live on."

Why "5 Minutes Alone"?

Zach Broderick: "That has always been my favorite song off of 'Far Beyond Driven'. I remember when I first heard that heaviness and the crunch in the verse… the endless riffing throughout the song… I was like, 'HOLY SHIT!' It was so complex, yet so in the pocket. The solo? So memorable by just bending one note back and fourth, the whole song just kicks your ass. Bottom line, it's badass, it slams, and it's awesome riff after awesome riff… NON-STOP!

"It was an honour to be asked to cover a song by such an influential band. This is definitely a highlight of my music career!"

NONPOINT vocalist Elias Soriano on why the band chose "5 Minutes Alone" and what Dimebag means to him:

"We picked '5 Minutes Alone' because… well, first of all, I can't believe no other band picked it but, we did it because its a fucking classic song. The perfect mold of 'the baddest riff ever' mixed with 'you're seconds away from getting your ass stomped' lyrics.

"Dime was everything rock needed to be with a heart the size of Texas. Miss you, brotha."

The "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott tribute album will include the following artists/cuts:

01. ZAKK WYLDE - "Suicide Note Pt. 1"
02. MACHINE HEAD - "Fucking Hostile"
03. MALEFICE - "I'm Broken"
04. AVENGED SEVENFOLD - "Walk"
05. EVILE - "Cemetery Gates"
06. FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH - "A New Level"
07. BIOHAZARD - "Mouth For War"
08. SYLOSIS - "Strength Beyond Strength"
09. CHIMAIRA - "Slaughtered"

12. KIUAS - "This Love"
13. THIS IS HELL - "Rise"

The song by EVILE turned out to be bassist Mike Alexander's very last and was recorded just before he himself died of a pulmonary embolism, a blockage of an artery in the lung, on October 5, 2009 while on tour with the band in Sweden.

"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was co-founder and lead guitarist for PANTERA. When PANTERA broke up in 2003, Dimebag and his brother Vinnie Paul formed DAMAGEPLAN. On Dec. 8, 2004, while performing with DAMAGEPLAN at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag was shot and killed onstage by Nathan Gale. He was 38 years old.
