Montreal Gazette: METALLICA's Brand Of Metal Shows No Sign Of Rust

July 19, 2003

T'cha Dunlevy of Montreal Gazette is reporting that a crowd of 50,000 is expected on Île Ste. Hélène Sunday (July 20) for METALLICA's Summer Sanitarium Tour. "There will be your old-guard metal-heads, to be sure, but there will also be legions of young pups — kids in their teens and 20s, lured by METALLICA's legendary status and a headliner-worthy roster of younger talent — LIMP BIZKIT, LINKIN PARK, DEFTONES and MUDVAYNE," Dunlevy writes.

"The event is proof of the enduring power of rock rage.

" '(I'm going) for the ensemble,' said François Picotin, 28, who will be attending the show. He was found having a beer with a couple of buddies Wednesday night at fabled Montreal rock dive Foufounes Électriques. "Especially LIMP BIZKIT. Their image is very disaffected, very 'Je m'en fou.'

" 'METALLICA had its time 20 years ago. (LIMP BIZKIT singer) Fred Durst is 33. He's just starting. His fans are in their 20s.'

" 'C'est de la musique qui brasse,' said Brin Paquet, 24, sitting at another table. 'It draws a big crowd and people freak out.'

"An avid concert-goer, Paquet will host a group of 25 to 30 friends coming in from Abitibi, Quebec City and the Gatineau for the show. They will meet at his apartment and head for the concert by métro.

" 'It's a show for all tastes," he said. "I don't know the DEFTONES or MUDVAYNE, but LIMP BIZKIT and METALLICA are very different. LIMP BIZKIT is rap-rock. A lot of METALLICA fans think they're shit.' " Read more.
