METALLICA 'Monster' Filmmakers Continue To Face 'Uphill Battle'

July 14, 2004

Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, the filmmakers behind the $4.3-million METALLICA documentary "Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster" have posted the following message on the group's official web site:

"Thank you to everyone who came to see 'Some Kind of Monster' this past weekend in New York and San Francisco. The movie was a big success, packed houses and sold-out crowds in its first weekend of release in New York and San Francisco.

"We had the highest per-screen average of any movie in the U.S. (even better than 'Spider-Man 2'!),and we owe it in huge part to you, the METALLICA fans, the most dedicated bunch of people we've ever met. Thank you so much for coming out to see the movie and to so many of you for helping us out on the release. Your continued support is key to convincing theatre-owners that people really will go to see a movie about METALLICA, something some people still have trouble believing.

"The great reviews and word-of-mouth the film has gotten have also started converting the uninitiated. We spoke with many people after the screenings who had never even listened to METALLICA, but left the theatre understanding why this band has so many fans.

"Now our work continues. If you live in New York or San Francisco but haven't seen the movie yet, go see it! If you have seen it and liked it, tell everyone you know to go check it out, and tell them to bring their friends. And if you've only seen it once, go see it again — we guarantee you'll find more things in it to enjoy.

"While we're very happy about the turnout this past weekend, we still have an uphill battle. In order to convince more theatres in more places that this movie is worth their while, we need to keep up this momentum beyond the opening weekend. We hope that you continue to go to see the film in New York, San Francisco and everywhere else it opens, and please keep up all of the great work that some of you are doing with the grassroots efforts.

"The movie is now playing in New York and San Francisco, and opens in Los Angeles, San Jose, Berkeley, Oakland, all across Canada this Friday, July 16th. We'll be traveling to as many cities as we can over the next few weeks, and we hope to see you all."
