MAX CAVALERA On SEPULTURA Reunion: 'Today It Is Much More Real Than A Couple Of Years Ago'

Christina Fuoco of The Flint Journal recently conducted an interview with SOULFLY/ex-SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On the possibility of a SEPULTURA reunion with him on vocals:

"There's nothing official but, yeah, I would say today it is much more real than a couple of years ago."

On his one-off August jam session with his brother Igor (ex-SEPULTURA drummer) in Tempe, Arizona:

"Igor called and said he wanted to be here ... I couldn't help it but come and ask him to jam. We've been jamming our whole life. We started the band together. It was such a treat to the fans. I saw the faces in the crowd, they were tripping out. And, of course, the (reaction) on the Internet was overwhelming. I kind of forgot how much controversy or whatever these things bring. I was just happy to see him and talk to him and jam with him. Everywhere I go, people ask about that."

On SEPULTURA's breakup:

"It was a strange time. The band [SEPULTURA] was getting kind of popular, at the same time when you get popular, a lot of problems start. One thing goes with the other. So inside the band there was a lot of fighting. We were young, too. I partially blame myself a little bit. I think the right thing would have been to take two years off and just go away from the whole thing and maybe the band would have never even split up if we had done that. But we didn't do that."

"After Dana's [stepson Dana Wells] death, we forced (ourselves) to go on tour. Nobody wanted to be on tour. That resulted in too much tension, and I ended up leaving.

"But something really cool came out of it — SOULFLY, which I love. So it's like, 'Yeah, you know, it was meant to be.' I was very disappointed and sad at first but SOULFLY came to answer a lot of my questions. SOULFLY did fill a big void in my life. It is filling it now and forever. I think I'll be grateful to SOULFLY. It saved me from stopping playing music. It's kind of bad and good at the same time."

On SOULFLY's support band INCITE, which features Cavalera's stepson, Richie:

"He's young and struggling. I'm supporting but that's about the break I gave him. I tell him, 'You're not coming on the bus. You have to sleep in the van and pay your dues.'"
