MADBALL: 'Today's Music Is So Much Heavier And Darker Than It's Ever Been'

Metalhead.ro recently conducted an interview with MADBALL. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Metalhead.ro: Who came up with the ideea for your new album? What`s it all about? Is MADBALL still fighting for libery and justice?

A: We all collaborated on the new record. We wanted to make a MADBALL record that was a little more up to date with today's sounds, but without getting too far away from our roots. Today's music is so much heavier and darker than it's ever been, and we wanted to aim in that direction. The lyrics Freddy wrote are much more political than anything the band has ever done, also.

Metalhead.ro: How did MADBALL change since 1989 ?

A: I've been with the band since 2001, but I can tell you that things have changed a lot over time. When the band started back then, it wasn't a serious thing. It was more of a side project of AGNOSTIC FRONT, with Freddy singing. In 1993, they put together a lineup (Hoya, Matt Henderson, Will Shepler) that stood on its own, and began moving away from AF. That's where it really became a serious thing. I think we've even changed since I've been in the band. We take it very seriously, and we work very hard touring and writing.

Metalhead.ro: What do you think about bands like DEATH BEFORE DISHONOUR or HATEBREED? Is their music related in any way to the forefather of hardcore?

A: I think their music is related to hardcore because all the members of those bands came from the hardcore scene. HATEBREED has definitely taken their music in a metal direction, but they all grew up going to hardcore shows. The music can be whatever it wants, but the "hardcore" part of it is going to come from the people writing it. Those guys all know their roots.

Metalhead.ro: Any old thoughts about the bands from the Eighties ? Bands like CRO-MAGS or NAUSEA?

A: That's the era that I grew up in. The CRO-MAGS were a huge influence on me, and on every hardcore band out there. Before the CRO-MAGS and AGNOSTIC FRONT, hardcore was still closer to being punk rock. Those bands brought in the metal influences, and got rid of any trace of melody. I think that's the true hardcore. Stuff before those bands was still hardcore/punk.
