LYNYRD SKYNYRD/BLACKFOOT's MEDLOCKE To Guest On 'American Idol'

When Fox airs this Wednesday's (May 18) segment of "American Idol", featuring their homecoming segments with the three remaining contestants, viewers will find LYNYRD SKYNYRD guitarist Rickey Medlocke as part of a surprise that awaited contestant Bo Bice. Bice, who had listed Medlocke's original band, BLACKFOOT, as one of his all-time favorite bands, thought he was arriving at a Birmingham hotel to do some interviews for the show, but when he walked into the hotel room, he found Medlocke waiting to greet him. "It was especially funny, because it all just sort of fell into place — it wasn't really all planned," Medlocke explains. "Some of the show's people saw our tour buses and asked our tour manager, Rick Howe, what band it was. When he told them LYNYRD SKYNYRD, they hatched the whole scheme, so it all comes off like it really was — totally unscripted."

The next day, Medlocke and SKYNYRD bassist Ean Evans joined Bice onstage for two SKYNYRD classics, "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Freebird", as part of his homecoming appearance. "I haven't played with BLACKFOOT for 10 years now," Rickey explains, "so having this young kid remember and admire the band like that meant a lot to me. I was happy to do this."

LYNYRD SKYNYRD were in Birmingham appearing there as part of their current U.S. tour.
