KURT COBAIN's Diaries Purchased For $4 Million, November Publication Date Expected

February 27, 2002

The diaries and notebooks of NIRVANA singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain were purchased by Riverhead Books, a division of Penguin Putnam, for $4 million, and a published compilation will be in stores by November. The proceeds from the book will go to the Cobain estate.

“The journals are an intimate portrait of an artist of great influence,” said Julie Grau, Riverhead's co-editorial director.

Cobain's notebook and diaries, which he began keeping when he was a teenager, are said to include black-and-white drawings, lyrics, lists of musicians who influenced him, and a handwritten draft of NIRVANA's classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit". The book was culled from 23 notebooks and more than 800 pages. The final version is expected to contain 350 pages.
