KRIST NOVOSELIC Finds NIRVANA in Grays River Valley
February 5, 2004Damian Mulinix of Chinook Observer reports that 2003 was really a transition year for former NIRVANA bassist Krist Novoselic in a lot of ways. The year before, he and the band EYES ADRIFT recorded what he calls "a fantastic record," but found that the climate of today's music industry makes it very hard for independent artists. He said he found himself really "swimming upstream" when it came to music.
"I was like, 'Why don't I just go with the flow?' I can always play music and I'm still going to play music. I just gave up on the music business.
"I basically retired from the music industry," he said, "I have the luxury where I can really decide how to spend my time."
His retirement came shortly after the surviving members of NIRVANA and Kurt Cobain's widow Courtney Love were able to come to an agreement and release a greatest hits album, almost 10 years after the death of Cobain, which effectively ended the band. The CD included the lost great NIRVANA song, "You Know You're Right". Novoselic said that there are still a lot more unreleased music and recordings that could be made available, but it is very difficult at this point to do that.
"That's a real process," he said. "There should be more stuff. There's been talk of a DVD because, thing is, there's not a lot of money in compact discs. It's hard to bootleg a DVD."
He related his late band to being like an "international trade" at this point.
"A lot of it has to do with the labels. You have to deal with people in New York and L.A., and then who owns it now? I think somebody in Brussels, Belgium or something." [Read more]
