JIMI HENDRIX Estate Sues Over Sale Of Unauthorized Recordings

March 14, 2005

Launch Radio Networks is reporting that Experience Hendrix LLC, the company that oversees the Jimi Hendrix estate, has filed a copyright infringement suit against Trans World Entertainment, the parent company of the FYE retail chain. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in the Western District of Washington, and it charges the company with selling the unlicensed CDs "Jimi Hendrix: His Greatest Hits" and "Jimi Hendrix: LA Forum", for which no royalties are paid. The suit demands that Trans World Entertainment stop selling the CDs, and that any remaining copies be destroyed, as well as damages and attorney's fees.

Jimi's half-sister Janie Hendrix, who's the President and CEO of Experience Hendrix LLC, said, "We have an obligation to protect Jimi's legacy and these unauthorized, inferior-quality CD releases confuse and disappoint his fans throughout the world. We will continue to make every effort to confront copyright infringement and piracy issues wherever and whenever possible."

"Jimi Hendrix: His Greatest Hits" is an unauthorized mono recording of a 1969 concert from London, while "Jimi Hendrix: LA Forum" is an unauthorized copy of an April 1969 gig, which was included in the 1990 box set called "Lifelines".
