FEAR FACTORY Frontman Says Label's Decision To Include U2 Cover On Last Album 'Sucked'

September 22, 2006

FasterLouder.com.au recently conducted an interview with FEAR FACTORY frontman Burton C. Bell. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On touring Australia:

"Australia has been a type of phenomenon throughout our history. Aussies like our style of music and we've had the opportunity to play in front of so many people here, either through our own shows or through the Big Day Out, so the word just keeps spreading.

"During our first-ever Melbourne show, I was knocked unconscious. We were playing the Sarah Sands Hotel (now Bridie O'Reilly's, Brunswick Road, Melbourne),and some guy jumped on stage during our set. Anyway, he was headbanging and so was I but I wasn't really paying attention. I went forward, he went back, and I ended up on the ground. I was out for about 15 seconds but I shook it off, and finished the gig."

On why he didn't take part in the "Roadrunner United: The All Star Sessions" album compiled by FEAR FACTORY's previous record label, Roadrunner Records:

"The Roadrunner Sessions? Man, I wasn't asked. And I probably wouldn't have done it anyway. I'm not interested in doing anything for that label."

On FEAR FACTORY bassist Byron Stroud, who also plays with STRAPPING YOUNG LAD:

"Byron brings a certain weight to the right side of the stage. Seriously, he's an excellent bass player and the FEAR FACTORY machine is operating smoothly without Dino. We're tighter on stage and off, a nice family now."

On FEAR FACTORY's new label's decision to include a cover of U2's "I Will Follow" on the band's latest album, "Transgression":

“We've always done covers, mostly as b-sides and bonus tracks. With 'Transgression', it was the label's idea to include the U2 song. We chose it but it was their idea to put them on the record. It really sucked and that won't be happening again."
