EARTH CRISIS Interviewed In Montreal

May 24, 2010

HardTimes.ca conducted an interview with Karl Buechner and Scott Crouse of reunited hardcore legends EARTH CRISIS when the band played in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on April 28, 2010. Watch the chat below.

EARTH CRISIS' chugging riffs and barked declarations served as the mouthpiece of America's militant vegan, straight-edge movement throughout the '90s, detailing the ideas of animal and human liberation, drug-free living and personal empowerment through hardcore music. The group has continued along this path of breaking new ground, constantly working and reaching more people spreading their message to the masses.

After a lengthy hiatus, the band reformed in 2008 to the delight of the hardcore genre. They soon produced the vicious new offering, "To The Death", that undoubtedly proved that they have never been stronger from both songwriting and musicianship perspectives.

EARTH CRISIS essentially put a close to this successful album's touring cycle with the "Wrath of Sanity" headlining North American tour. This stellar bill, which kicked off on April 22, also featured such acclaimed acts as FIRST BLOOD and THICK AS BLOOD. The trek also hit the New England Metal And Hardcore Festival and concluded at the California Metalfest.

Longtime drummer Dennis Merrick only played the first four shows and was replaced by Andy Hurley (FALL OUT BOY) for the remainder of the tour. Hurley previously stated, "EARTH CRISIS is one of my favorite bands ever. They are the reason why I am vegan and straight edge. The origins of most of my philosophical/political beliefs come from them introducing me to a whole new way of thinking.

"When I was asked to fill in on the tour, I was beyond stoked. It felt like being called up to the major league, and I [thought] that this [would] be the most fun I [would] have on a tour."

"To The Death" was released on May 5, 2009 via Century Media Records (April 20 in Europe). The self-produced CD was recorded at Castle Recording Studios in Utica, New York and was mixed by Tue Madsen (HEAVEN SHALL BURN, DARK TRANQUILLITY, MOONSPELL, THE HAUNTED). Artwork for the effort was handled by Paul Romano (MASTODON, GODFLESH).
