DREAM THEATER Drummer Jams With OVERKILL In New Jersey

October 1, 2006

DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy joined OVERKILL on stage on Saturday (Sept. 30) during their Gigantour 2006 set at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey to perform the song "Elimination".

Portnoy previously performed "Elimination" with OVERKILL at the Sweden Rock Festival in June 2005 and at radio personality Eddie Trunk's annual Halloween party in October 2004 at the Hard Rock Café in New York City. A video clip of the latter performance is available for viewing at this location (12.3 MB, Windows Media). Also making an appearance in the video on backing vocals and air guitar is Mets catcher Mike Piazza, a longtime heavy metal fan and frequent guest on Trunk's radio show.

Speaking to Eddie live on Q104.3 FM prior to the Hard Rock performance, Portnoy said about the opportunity to jam with OVERKILL, "It [is] awesome. To people that don't know me, they just know DREAM THEATER, they probably think this is the most pairing in the world — the OVERKILL fans probably think this is like Neil Peart playing with PANTERA. But [the people that] know me know my metal roots. I grew up going to see OVERKILL at L'Amour [club in Brooklyn]. I would see OVERKILL and EXODUS and TESTAMENT and ANTHRAX and that whole scene — that whole scene, that old '80s scene, that whole metal scene, that was me, man. So this is totally in my blood, and I'm totally psyched."
