DISTURBED's Musical Direction On Next Album 'Can't Be Forced'

December 21, 2016

While they were in Australia on their recent tour, DISTURBED guitarist Dan Donegan and drummer Mike Wengren answered a bunch of fan-submitted questions for Maniacs TV. Check out the question-and-answer session in two parts below.

Asked about DISTURBED's plans for the follow-up to last year's "Immortalized" album, Donegan said: "Right now we're still in touring mode, so there's no discussion of when we'll be writing for the next album. But when the time does come, it just really has to happen naturally. I mean, whether we go back to 'The Sickness' [2000] sound or 'Believe' [2002] sound, it just really can't be forced."

On the topic of their favorite bands to tour with, Wengren said: "One of the best recent moments, we just got to be the main support for BLACK SABBATH for one of their final North American dates ever before they hang it up. It was amazing being able to go on stage and do what we do and then be followed up right after with the guys from BLACK SABBATH, who we have nothing but tremendous respect for."

Added Donegan: "There are so many iconic bands, from SABBATH to METALLICA to JUDAS PRIEST, that we've shared the stage many times with… And to KISS… Early in our career, in 2000, we were playing with PANTERA on Ozzfest. I mean, that was a big moment for us. I think we were all pretty giddy, and it felt like a very surreal moment to be… the year before, being a local band out of Chicago, and one year later, we were up on stage and on a tour with one of the best."

DISTURBED is nominated in the "Best Rock Performance" category at this year's Grammy Awards. The band is nominated for its live performance of "The Sound Of Silence", while Beyoncé is up for her track "Don't Hurt Yourself", which features Jack White. The other nominees in the category include TWENTY ONE PILOTS for "Heathens", David Bowie for the title track from his "Blackstar" album and ALABAMA SHAKES for a live rendition of their song "Joe".

"The Sound Of Silence", a cover of the SIMON & GARFUNKEL classic, appears on DISTURBED's 2015 album "Immortalized" — although their Grammy nomination is for the band's performance of the song on "Conan".

DISTURBED's last Grammy nomination was in 2009, when it was up in the now-retired "Best Hard Rock Performance" category for "Inside The Fire".
