DEEP PURPLE Bassist Leaves Door Open For Possible Live Appearances With RITCHIE BLACKMORE

April 15, 2004

George Palathingal of The Sydney Morning Herald reports that some DEEP PURPLE purists wonder whether the band should have even continued to use the name since the (final) departure of founding guitarist and linchpin Ritchie Blackmore in 1994. Would Blackmore ever be allowed to return to the fold?

"Well, I'd certainly leave the door open to one-off performances," bassist Roger Glover told The Sydney Morning Herald after long, heavy pause. "I can't see it happening on a permanent basis. I've got nothing against working with Ritchie again. I just don't wanna be in a band with him."

Why not?

"Um, I'm happier where I am now. But I've got a ton of respect for him. As a musician [and] writer, he brought amazing things to this band. He was the guiding light in the early years. His riffs are — y'know, they're the riffs of the band."

When The Sydney Morning Herald tried to reach Blackmore for comment, his New York media contact said: "Ritchie is in the studio right now working on the sixth BLACKMORE'S NIGHT release. He has devoted his career to BLACKMORE'S NIGHT since 1997, making it the huge worldwide success that it is today."
