DANGEROUS TOYS To Reunite For One More Show: Video Available

May 7, 2005

Andy Langer of News 8 Austin has issued the following report:

The DANGEROUS TOYS may be Austin's most successful hard rock band ever. Their 1990 debut was certified gold and they've sold more than 1 million records since.

And while they haven't officially existed for the better part of seven years, they'll reunite Saturday night to celebrate their 18th anniversary.

In rock and roll, 18 years is an eternity. But rather than fear the nostalgia, the DANGEROUS TOYS are embracing it. And rather than feel old, they feel like celebrating.

"It's actually something I think we can be proud of. We're easing into our old age while we're headbanging. I guess you could say I'm fighting it, but does it look like I'm fighting anything? I'm enjoying it," singer Jason McMaster (also of WATCHTOWER) said.

Fifteen years ago, the DANGEROUS TOYS were bona fide MTV stars. They were the first band signed directly out of South By Southwest and racked up gold sales for their debut. But because they were a hard rock band in the heyday of GUNS N' ROSES and L.A. GUNS, there's still a little misunderstanding that lingers today.

"We are not from Los Angeles. You start a rock and roll band and it might have been flavor-of-the-month, but in my opinion DANGEROUS TOYS was always AC/DC, AEROSMITH, with a lot of injection of heavy metal ZZ TOP. And that sounds great. But even though we flew Texas flags proudly in the back of our videos and all of us have Texas tattoos all over us, they still never got it. Maybe they never will," McMaster said.

Today, McMaster is in a half dozen other bands and the DANGEROUS TOYS reunite only occasionally. And when they do Saturday night at Red-Eyed Fly, McMaster will mark 18 years by breaking out the Texas-flag pants he made famous back in the good ol' MTV days.

"A friend of mine here in Austin is the keeper of the Texas flag leather pants. Every couple of years I have to call him and say, 'Hey man, how's it going? So, do you have my pants?' It's funny. And he keeps telling me he's going to make a shadowbox and have them all rock-star lit, with a plague next to the gold record. It hasn't happened yet and that's okay, because he'd need a sign that said 'Break glass in case of reunion show,'" McMaster said.
