Comedian JIM FLORENTINE Talks About Touring With DAMAGEPLAN

October 27, 2005

In a recent interview with Dan Lorenzo (ex-HADES guitarist) of Steppin' Out magazine (web site),comedian and avid heavy metal fan Jim Florentine ("Crank Yankers", "Inside the NFL", "The Howard Stern Show") spoke about touring with DAMAGEPLAN in 2004 as the band's opening act. An excerpt from the chat follows:

Steppin' Out: What do you remember most about touring with Dimebag and DAMAGEPLAN?

Florentine: "It was just a great learning experience man. Just watching them get up for a gig, like before the gig and watching their ritual. Just watching a guy that had played for 100,000 people in Russia or whatever. When they started DAMAGEPLAN they were doing smaller crowds, and they were doing a small headliner tour starting in Canada. Just watching them go, 'Hey man, there's f--king 300 people out there — nobody better f--king lay down tonight. Let's give these 300 kids a f--king killer show. I don't want anybody going through the motions out there, pretend there's a 100,000 people out there.' This is coming from a guy who had millions in the bank, he can get back with PANTERA the next day and sell 20,000 seats but the guy was still motivated playing to 300 people in the middle of Canada."

Steppin' Out: After the murder of Dimebag did you ever get fearful of hecklers while doing your act?

Florentine: "Yeah I did, because I really go at people sometimes, you know — I don't take no shit. If some one is heckling it gets ugly. I have to command the stage and I have to show them who's boss when I'm up there. So yeah, I mean there's been times when a guy is screaming and the bouncer has to pull them out of the club — so it's always in the back of your mind, but I just have to go out there and do it man."
