CHTHONIC Promotes Taiwan's UN Bid In Interview With PBS
August 8, 2007Taipei Times reports that black metal band CHTHONIC promoted Taiwan, particularly its bid to join the international community, during a tour of the U.S., the U.S. Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) reported last Thursday.
In an interview on the PBS program "Pacifictime", CHTHONIC lead vocalist Freddy Lin said that the band had spoken out for Taiwan's causes, mainly its difficulties in joining international organizations because of Beijing's obstruction, during its performances at Ozzfest 2007 last month.
Lin said CHTHONIC gave 20 performances at Ozzfest this year, which is being held all over the U.S.
Lin said the band performed both in Mandarin and Hoklo (also known as Taiwanese),but he was not worried that their songs might not be accepted by U.S. fans because heavy metal audiences pay more attention to the music than lyrics.
"UNlimited Taiwan", however, was performed in English to demonstrate the band's support for Taiwan's bid to join the UN, he said.
Lin said he spoke out in English at every concert, asking fans to support Taiwan as the band's music was inspired in and by the nation.
The seven-minute PBS interview is expected to be rebroadcast by 15 other PBS stations in the next few months, Lin said, adding that fans in Hong Kong and southern China will also be able to catch the interview on channel Radio 3.
