October 11, 2001

As exclusively reported here on October 2nd, Roadrunner Records have now officially confirmed the departure of drummer Joe Nunez from SOULFLY and have hinted at the possibility of original drummer Roy Mayorga returning to the fold, a move that was denied by Mayorga in a statement sent to BLABBERMOUTH.NET (as reported here on Tuesday, October 9th). Meanwhile, SOULFLY's recently-completed three-song demo, which was produced by mainman Max Cavalera and engineered by Otto 'Rusty' D'Agnolo at Phoenix's (Brill Street) Chaton Studios, features an appearance by former SACRED REICH drummer Greg Hall and Danny Marianino from the Phoenix band NORTHSIDE KINGS, who added some guitar and bass tracks to the recording. A relative unknown in metal circles, D'Agnolo had previously collaborated with Cavalera on the two NAILBOMB releases (Point Blank and Proud To Commit Commercial Suicide) and SOULFLY's cover of BLACK SABBATH's “Under The Sun” for the Nativity In Black II tribute CD. The three songs on the demo are as follows:

...

01. 'Downstroy'

Described by a Roadrunner Records representative as “a future SOULFLY classic with a driving riff on the verse that is reminiscent of 'Eye For An Eye' with a Chaos A.D.-era guitar tuning”.

...

02. 'Enterfaith'

“A Primitive-style track with a monster hook and some adventurous vocals by Max”.

...

03. 'I Will Refuse'

“A ferocious cover of the PAILHEAD song. Max played all instruments on this one,” except for the drums (which were tracked by the above-mentioned Hall).

...

Roadrunner Records have also confirmed that Max will be in the producer's chair for the recording of the group's third full-length effort, the recording for which is tentatively set to begin later this month at the aforementioned (Brill Street) Chaton Studios, with a possibility that Andy Wallace will once again be enlisted to mix the album. Also on the SOULFLY front, it has now been confirmed that the band (presumably with Hall behind the kit) will be appearing live on October 20th at the Navajo Fairgrounds in Tuba City, AZ alongside NORTHSIDE KINGS. A possibility also exists that the group will perform at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City come February, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.

MARILYN MANSON have recorded a version of 'Tainted Love' (originally done by SOFT CELL) that will be released as a single in conjunction with the film Not Another Teen Movie. Look for the single sometime in early November. In other movie news, MANSON's remix of the 'Nobodies' will appear in the Johnny Depp film From Hell as well as on the movie soundtrack. The score music that MANSON composed in the film will not be used because no agreement could be reached. Look for other Manson film projects to be announced soon.

MUDVAYNE have issued a statement regarding the group's cancellation of the remainder of the Pledge Of Allegiance tour and their involvement with the upcoming A Night Of Merry Mayhem trek, which is scheduled to begin at the end of the month. The statement reads as follows: “Dear MUDVAYNE fans, after 18 consecutive months on the road MUDVAYNE has decided to cancel all remaining dates of the Pledge of Allegiance tour. We want to sincerely apologize to our fans for this disappointment, but due to business circumstances that MUDVAYNE had with the tour, a quick decision had to be made. The next 3 weeks will allow the band to re-group and prepare for our most exciting tour yet, Merry Mayhem, with OZZY OSBOURNE and ROB ZOMBIE, starting Halloween night in Tucson, Arizona. Our apologies for any inconvenience or misunderstanding. Gurrg, Kud, Ryknow &amp sPaGMUDVAYNE

Here is a message from the ANTHRAX camp regarding the recent world events that have brought their band name (indirectly) into the spotlight:

...

“In light of current events, we are changing the name of the band to something more friendly, 'Basket Full Of Puppies'. Actually, just the fact that we are making jokes about our name sucks.

...

“In the twenty years we've been known as 'ANTHRAX', we never thought the day would come that our name would actually mean what it really means. When I learned about anthrax in my senior year biology class, I thought the name sounded 'metal'. Everyone in my neighborhood had a band with an 'er' name, like 'RIPPER' or 'DECEIVER' or 'KILLERS' and I wanted to be different. 'ANTHRAX' sounded cool, aggressive, and nobody knew what it was. Until a few years ago most people thought we'd made it up. Even our album, Spreading The Disease was just a play on the name. We were spreading our music to the masses.

...

“Before the tragedy of September 11th, the only thing scary about ANTHRAX was our bad hair in the 80's and the Fistful Of Metal album cover. Most people associated the name ANTHRAX with the band, not the germ. Now in the wake of those events, our name symbolizes fear, paranoia and death. Suddenly our name is not so cool. To be associated with these things we are against is a strange and stressful situation. To us, and to millions of people, it is just a name. We don't want to change the name of the band, not because it would be a pain in the ass, but because we hope that no further negative events will happen and it won't be necessary. We hope and pray that this problem goes away quietly and we all grow old and fat together.

...

“Be safe, Scott, Charlie, Frank and John AKA

...

“PS - If an ANTHRAX member gets anthrax, call Alanis Morrisette. That would be ironic. Don't you think?”

According to Germany's PRIMAL FEAR, “the songwriting for [our] new album Black Sun is nearly finished. We will start with the pre production after the shows in Greece and the studio is booked for December. More news later!”

HAMMERFALL guitarist Oscar Dronjak has revealed that the group will no longer be performing in their stage outfits following the recent completion of the Renegade world tour. According to Dronjak, “time marches on, and now we must look ahead towards the future. I am very anxious to begin working on the new album, which is (very) tentatively scheduled to be released in September or October 2002.” In other news, the group will soon be issuing a DVD containing footage filmed over the course of the last three years as a follow-up to The First Crusade video, which received great acclaim. Says the guitarist: “The response to The First Crusade was overwhelming, so we have begun putting together a sequel in the same spirit chronicling the more important events from September 1998 to the fall of 2001 with a (hopefully) tongue-in-cheek atmosphere. The good thing is that we have had video cameras present almost constantly since October 1998, so there is much to choose from. Therein lies the problem, too we simply have too much footage! A severe axing of the less interesting parts will have to take place, ensuring that the remaining material is entertaining for the viewer and not just for ourselves. That's why we have hired the assistance of a video production company to help put together the release from an outsider's point of view. Originally, we wanted to put the VHS/DVD in the stores before Christmas, but the deeper we got into the project, we realized that this goal would be nearly impossible to achieve without compromising the quality of the release. And that is something we just will not do! The same goes for the albums: if it's not ready to be recorded or released, it won't be. It's as simple as that: if we're not satisfied with the result, it won't see the light of day. So, be on the lookout for a brand new, up-to-date home video release sometime in the first months of next year.”

CONTROL DENIED have denied reports (posted via other Internet sources) that vocalist Tim Aymar's no longer in the band. As previously reported, CONTROL DENIED's partly-recorded sophomore effort, entitled When Machine and Man Collide, has been postponed indefinitely due to mainman Chuck Schuldiner's ongoing battle with a malignant brain tumor.

Here is a letter written by COAL CHAMBER bassist Rayna Foss-Rose and her husband Morgan Rose (SEVENDUST drummer) regarding a special friend of theirs: “We are writing this letter to talk about a very special friend of ours. His name is Cameron Gallion, he's fourteen years old, an aspiring drummer and bass player, and he is the strongest person we've ever met. He has been in the hospital since last November receiving chemo treatments and his body can't take it any more. His family has decided to turn him over to the hands of God and nature. Morgan and I are praying everyday for Cameron and we would like to ask all of the people that we reach with our music to do the same. God bless you., Rayna and Morgan...
