ANVIL Documentary Maker Speaks; Video Available

June 12, 2008

Jian Ghomeshi of QTV recently conducted an interview with Sacha Gervasi the director of "Anvil! The Story of Anvil", a mockumentary-like true account of fiftysomething Canadian heavy-metal practitioners Robb Reiner and Steve "Lips" Kudlow who, after a desultory European tour with their band ANVIL, decide to record a 13th album in a final attempt to fulfill their boyhead dreams of stardom. Watch the 16-minute chat below.

Sacha Gervasi is an old friend of the band's that used to do some roadie work for them back in the 1980s. He has filmed some of their shows from their November 2005 and June 2006 European tours. He also filmed Lips' 50th birthday show at Heads or Tails in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada on February 25, 2006. As well, he filmed some of the recording of "This Is Thirteen". Sacha also interviewed many people from ANVIL's past and present, including former bandmembers.

"Anvil! The Story of Anvil" made its debut in the Premieres section of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, which ran January 17-27, 2008, in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah.

"Whatever happens with the movie from here on in is sort of irrelevant," Sacha Gervasi told the New York Times. "It's already a success in terms of achieving what we wanted to achieve."

Money was never ANVIL's motivation. I can't envision myself being a millionaire," Kudlow said, "but I can envision myself going to a gig every night and making enough money to make ends meet. I want to be the biggest bar band in the world and work endlessly."

"My initial reaction to the film was, 'Who cares about this?'" Reiner said. "The Toronto Sun here did a big blowout on the movie being at Hot Docs and a big picture of the band. I'm shocked at whats going on. And when I saw how audiences reacted at Sundance, it opened my eyes that this movie has something else to it."
