ANTHRAX Gutarist On His Favorite Movies, Working With Composer ANGELO BADALAMENTI

IFC News recently conducted an interview with ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Q: What's your favorite movie of all time?

Scott Ian: "'Raging Bull'. It's the movie that I can watch over and over again and never, ever get tired of it. It's just kind of that you could see the paths that the people [Scorsese, DeNiro] involved in that movie were on and it was a culmination of the years of those guys working with each other and realizing who they were as artists and it all just came together on that movie."

Q: Your song "Now It's Dark" is obviously based on "Blue Velvet". Are you a big David Lynch fan?

Scott Ian: "Yeah. I mean, I couldn't say I've liked every one of David Lynch's movies, but I'm always the first in line when there's something coming out."

Q: You actually worked with composer Angelo Badalamenti on the song "Black Lodge"?

Scott Ian: "It was really cool because we were really into 'Twin Peaks' at the time and Charlie [Benante] had come up with this music that was very influenced by the background music on the show and it was really dark. And I was like, I wrote these lyrics, although the lyrics really don’t have anything to do with 'Twin Peaks'. Metaphorically I can say they were influenced by 'Twin Peaks' or metaphorically connect with the characters in 'Twin Peaks', but the lyrics are more about my own life. But musically it certainly was influenced by 'Twin Peaks' and we just had the idea, 'Hey, why not call up Angelo and see if he'd be interested in doing something with us?' And we sent him a demo of what we had done and he met with us and watched us play and he came back with all these charts and he might as well have pulled out a Russian encyclopedia. I mean, we had no idea. What the hell?! And he’s like, 'There's this part and this part and this is the guitar thing and this is the keyboard thing,' and we all said, 'Just go for it, dude.' So he took it and basically turned our little thing into a big, huge, dark orchestral moment, which was really cool for us."

Q: If somebody came up to you tomorrow and said, we’re making "Anthrax: The Movie", who should play you and who should direct?

Scott Ian: "Sean Penn should play me and I'll go with Peter Jackson as the director just because I know he'll do a great job with it."
