ANTHRAX Guitarist Issues OZZFEST Recap

August 11, 2008

ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian has issued the following update:

"Had a great time in Dallas [at the one-day Ozzfest on Saturday, August 9]. Rehearsal at Vinnie Paul's [HELLYEAH/ex-PANTERA drummer] house Friday night was a blast. Jamming [PANTERA's] 'New Level' and 'Walk' with Vince, Bob Zilla [HELLYEAH/ex-DAMAGEPLAN bassist], Chad [Gray, HELLYEAH/MUDVAYNE singer] and Nick Bowcott [former GRIM REAPER guitarist] and then heading over to the venue to jam 'Walk' with Kirk [Hammett of METALLICA]. METALLICA threw a BBQ for all the bands Friday night and everyone was hanging out eating and drinking 'til the wee hours.

"Saturday Pearl [Aday, Ian's fiancée and daughter of legendary crooner Meat Loaf] and I got to the venue and started rehearsing 'Wish You Were Here' [PINK FLOYD cover] with Jerry Cantrell and Mike Inez [of ALICE IN CHAINS]. I also rehearsed 'New Level' with Max and Igor Cavalera [of CAVALERA CONSPIRACY] and Nick Bowcott. That was killer!! Max and Igor are amazing, and I am a dork fan.

"Lars [Ulrich, METALLICA drummer] showed up and rehearsed 'Wish You Were Here' with Pearl and Jerry and we were ready to go.

"HELLYEAH's set kicked ass and then the Dimebag tribute started off with 'Mouth For War' with Jamey Jasta [HATEBREED] on vocals. Next up was 'A New Level' with me, Max and Igor, Bob Zilla and Nick Bowcott. 'Wish You Were Here' with Pearl, Jerry, Mike Inez, Lars and myself was next and it was amazing. The whole crowd was singing along. I couldn't help but get choked up. Thank you so much!!! 'Hostile' was next with Kerry King [SLAYER] on guitar and 'Walk' was supposed to be after that with me on rhythm and Kirk Hammett on lead but they were out of time and we couldn't do it. Next time!!!

"Thanks to everyone for making this happen and here's to Darrell, Getcha pull!!!

"I saw a little bit of OZZY and he sounded great and then METALLICA.

"The stadium was packed before METALLICA's set. It was the most crowded I'd seen it all day. You crazy Texans have some serious stamina!!

"METALLICA played a brutal set. No big production, it was all about the songs. They played 'Ride The Lightning', 'Damage Inc', 'Master Of Puppets', 'No Remorse' and 'Seek And Destroy', among others. It's so fun to watch a band playing thrash metal to 30,000 people. The highlight of the set for me was the 12-minute MERCYFUL FATE tribute with King Diamond on vocals. Fucking brilliant.

"Ozzfest was a blast. Can't wait for next year."
