ANDREW W.K. Speaks Out On Art Of Headbanging

November 25, 2002

Hyperactive party rocker ANDREW W.K. recently offered the following advice to a fan on the art of headbanging and "slamming":

"The most important part of the slam dances is to build it up," Andrew said. "The first few times you bang you will get a very sore neck! The neck muscles are very sensitive and they are not used to being slammed and pulled. Put they can get stronger. It just takes time. Once you slam-out and they get sore, let them recover, and eat some extra protein, like milk or eggs or something. It's just like being sore after you do pushups. Your body needs to rebuild and repair. Then when you do it again, your neck muscles will be prepared! Also the head needs to stay loose — you don't want to tighten and tear away, but rather think of your head like a bowling ball attached to the end of a piece of spaghetti, it needs to whip and race! It also helps if you have a strong back, a loose set of hips, and a piledriving spine. I've found that if you focus too much on the actually slamming of the head, the skull knocks the brain around too much. If you let your shoulders set the roll then you can kind of pitch and curve with the beat rather than force and buckle! But what ever you do, don't EVER stop slamming!!!"
