Four years have passed since VOIVOD's last album, "Infini", and seven since the tragic demise of guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour, but the Canadian progressive metal institution clearly has no plans of calling it a career.

No strangers to adversity, of course, the band has endured numerous lineup changes over the years (though, admittedly, none as traumatizing as Piggy's demise), so while it clearly took them a little longer to regroup and move ahead via 2013's eagerly anticipated "Target Earth", one can say, in retrospect, that another VOIVOD album was as inevitable as an inbound, civilization-wiping mega-asteroid.

That's right. You heard it here first: killer asteroids. Now where were we? Oh yes?

For this, VOIVOD's thirteenth studio album, ever present drummer Michel "Away" Langevin and long reinstated vocalist Denis "Snake" Belanger managed the coup of dragging founding bassist, Jean-Yves "Blacky" Theriault out of retirement (replacing the headline grabbing, but creatively ineffectual Jason Newsted), making it three-out-of-four original VOIVOD-ers - the better to facilitate new guitarist Daniel "Chewy" Mongrain's unenviable task of filling Piggy's space boots. To his credit, Mongrain blends right in, and so too does "Target Earth" blend in with numerous portions of VOIVOD's itinerant musical past, arguably making it the band's first truly "regressive" - not "progressive" - album, and, as such, likely good news for the band's oldest fans.

Well, not the oldest, since virtually none of its songs recall even traces of the wanton savagery that defined VOIVOD's first three, avant-thrash efforts (maybe the biting riffs of "Corps Etranger", the tribal drums of "Warchaic"); but rather their subsequent 'golden period,' beginning with 1988's "Dimension Hatross", culminating with the universally acclaimed "Nothingface" and universally debated "Angel Rat" (a brilliant, if divisive, musical adventure), and fading with '93's fatigued, uneven "The Outer Limits".

As a result, the more linear portions of the title track and "Resistance" might momentarily recall "Angel Rat", but the vast majority of these cuts - including world-beating standouts "Empathy for the Enemy" and "Mechanical Mind" - drink directly from the stimulating "Nothingface" wellspring: weaving deeper textures and unexpected riff and tempo changes into their notably expanded lengths (yes, most songs here notably average six or seven minutes).

As always, this particular course of songwriting action won't please all VOIVOD fans - how could it? - but for an album facing such high stakes in the wake of the band's often turbulent and more recently tragic history, the only verdict one can render weighs heavily in the Canuck quartet's favor. With so many decades-old metal bands beating dead horses out there, instead of retiring with dignity, it's truly refreshing to see VOIVOD forging onwards with dignity and creativity largely intact, whether progressing or regressing in progressive fashion.

It was hard to find someone to get into Piggy's shoes but Daniel Mongrain is the best option the band had. The new material bears enough of the trademark elements people love from Voivod but also slips-in really well the modern landscape of 2013 heavy music. The only down point for me are the vocals, which feels strained and forced in some places. I guess Snake peaked vocally on Nothingface. The inclusion of a full song in french is a welcomed move!

All in all it's a great return for Voivod an hopefuly an indication of great new music to come.

Been a fan since DH, but their last few albums really didn't do much for me, but this album is damn good. Best since Nothigface IMO.

Chewy does an amazing job filling Piggy's shoes and it's great to hear the one and only Blacky on the blower bass.

Great album

8.5/10

I've been there since KT with these guys and like JJay above their last few albums didn't do anything for me. I like this direction, it's great to have Blacky back and yes Snakes vocals are a little strained.
I'm not in love with it, it is growing on me, Chewy ain't no Piggy but there can be only one. He's doing a good job and all in all I'm glad they carried on and brought us this and like TheEagle mentions I hope this is the beginning of even better stuff to come.
I have to mention the totally underwhelming production though. This is a band that have a great live feel in the studio but this sounds so Lo Fi it's untrue. Played it back to back with DH and it sounds so weak next to an album produced in 1989! With a powerful sound this would have been and 8 instead I'd give it a 7.
Looking forward to more.

Great comeback from these legends. Mongraine rules. He is Piggy's perfect successor. RIP Denis. Voivod appears to be in great hands.

Great comeback indeed. I used to be a big fan but with the last albums i didn't give a shit about them. This one is excellent considering their age and the trouble they've gone through, losing a founding member and composer. Respect regained...

I've always been aware of Voivod....but for some reason never really gotten into them. I do have Nothingface and gave it a few spins back in the day, but that's it. I didn't have anything against them....they just got past me. But this new album kicks all sorts of ass!! I love it! This new guy that took Piggy's place seems to have gelled with the rest of the band seamlessly. Great album - get it.

with all the sentiments expressed above.

This band NEVER disappoints. Although sailing on without Piggy was a nerve-wrackingly ballsy move they have produced one of their best albums. Probably the best since Nothingface.

Holy fuck this album kills.

While this idiot writer only gives it a 8.I have to give it a 9.5.The lp is wonderfully crafted.Snake's voice is a little strained,I must admit, but it seems to blend in for what they are trying to do.Dan did an super job of really getting creative with the riffs.Blacky and Dan wrote most of the music for the lp which speaks volumes of how must trust the Snake and Away had in these 2 guys. You just do not see that kind of trust nowadays with bands letting the new guys write stuff and that leads too departures. They did not disappoint.I have been a fan of Voivod for a very long time,I did not like their last 2 lp's that much and I did not think that this one would be that good. But,this is some of their best work they have ever done in my opinon. No disrespect too Piggy in no way.If you are thinking about getting whether to get this lp or not and are a Voivod fan.I say get and you will not be disappointed.Voivod is back and in a big way.Hail Voivod.

perhaps you should look up Eduardo's metal background before calling him an idiot. He's been at it a very long time & DOES know what he's talking about...even if you want to disagree. Calling him an idiot shows just how smart you are.

I much prefer Snake's vocals on the last few albums than stuff from around the time of Nothingface. I always liked this band a lot but I swear that dude can't carry a tune on the old albums. Better vocal melodies in the last few releases.

Blabbermouth is lucky to have Eduardo Rivadavia on the review team! One of the most creative, thoughtful, humorous, and I'd say BEST, metal reviews in existence.

Got to check out this album now. Loving VEKTOR for years now, and of course they fully respect Voivod, whom have influenced so many....

Yes they are! I have been reading Eduardo's work at allmusic.com for over 10 years & he knows his metal & has helped me expand my metal collection significantly. It is too bad many of the illiterates who reside here cannot respect the opinions of others in comparison to their own. Really, is it worth bitching if the album is an 8 or a 9?

Fantastic album, I've liked pretty much everything this band have ever done but this is easily the best since The Outer Limits and almost on a par with some of their classics. I was very doubtful they'd be able to pull this off without Piggy but Dan has proven to be a brilliant replacement.

Got the VoiVoD live with Kreator in Nov 1987, I still prefer the heavy VoiVoD!

This new Album is a great New-Start, but it could by somehow heavier.

I got them live at Wacken 2010 again: Snake needs a buttkick. Chewie rules as "new" member. He fits like a glove.

i don't forget Away and Blacky: Mosh on!

The cover is getting a lot of stick but I really like it personally. Away drew it and he does a lot of pulpy sci-fi art like this, sure it's pretty basic but I think it looks cool.

has always seemed a good representation of the idiosyncratic nature of their music almost as if Away comes up with the artwork first and the band writes music to fit. Personal favs are The Outer Limits and Warriors of Ice. My vibe from the new release is a whacked-out psychedelic journey and while I questioned the cover art at first unveiling the music puts all the pieces in place. You gotta admit, Away and the band wanted to create some controversy and get attention i.e. we are back ...and the cover did the job for sure. Outstanding cd, taking three steps back to reconnect with their base/roots before venturing over new horizons.

I still have no idea why people get upset because of one critic's opinion, let alone an anonymous fucking THUMBS DOWN on blabbermouth. I disagreed with a lot of things in the review, but hell, some of them had nothing to do with Target Earth or the score. The Outer Limits, for instance. Far from uneven, it's easily their most underrated album besides Phobos. TOL is basically the pinnacle of everything Voivod had attempted up until that point. Nothingface is still their genius work though.

Still though, it's not a bad written review, and at the end of the day, it's one man giving his opinion. The irony is always lost on the people who choose to bitch out reviews. This was way more tolerable than some of the pretentious crap that's been on blabbermouth lately and sputnik/Pitchfork always.

A credit to Dan Mongrain, probably the only viable replacement on Earth.

R.I.P. Piggy. But, I think Chewy and his angular jazz riffing has you beat. The result, same odd time meter riffs with bizarre chord changes, but Chewy's leads and fills put this a notch up.

The band is in top form here. Hard to believe after 30 years, they can still churn out some of the most creative and artistic material this side of the Milky Way.

This is fuckin' fantastic!

Been a long time fan of Voivod [since Killing Technology]. The album review.....hmmm....disparaging remarks about Jason Newsted and The Outer Limits album..... One, saying Jason isn't creative -- wrong. And your comments on The Outer Limits, go back and listen to the album again [please refrain from smoking crack until at least AFTER you have listened to TOL, mmm-kay?].
I think Target Earth fits right into the Voivod catalog very well. You can't really tell the difference in the absence of Piggy [no disrespect intended] which is surprising given Piggy's talent and unique playing & writing style. Cheers to Chewy!

Chewy ia most certainly possessed by the ghost of Piggy....and that is NOT a bad thing.

If anyone else was playing guitar besides Chewy...in place of Piggy?....this would suck ass....but Chewy's playing gives me chills because all i hear is Piggy....that is a compliment and no disrespect toward Chewy.

May Voivod live forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
