After Steven Tyler hopped into the hot seat as Simon Cowell's replacement on "American Idol", the subsequent public venting by Joe Perry made the prospect of a new AEROSMITH album (much less an album of all originals) pretty damned slim. Of course, their British counterparts Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have long set the bar for music mogul bitchery and THE ROLLING STONES are once again on tour this year. In the grand scheme of things, Tyler bailed on "Idol" and all seems forgiven in the AEROSMITH camp as we're treated to "Music From Another Dimension!" their first new record in eight years.

Despite the super-hip title, "Music From Another Dimension!" shouldn't be treated as anything groundbreaking or even a full-on attempt at shaking up AEROSMITH's sound for 2012. The gnarly B movie cover art is the closest AEROSMITH gets to treading towards a modish step forward. Instead, they reach for the bread and the butter and they sink a lot of duckets into another big-league, saucy rock 'n roll joint, the same one they've been recording since "Permanent Vacation".

If you're a diehard or merely in tune with kickback blues rock to down some suds to, then "Music From Another Dimension!" is your huckleberry, or sassafras, if you're Mr. Tyler. While nearly no one these days bothers to throw five years' worth of budget money into their production anymore, AEROSMITH spares no expense to hammer down this album with every glossy fill and gucci trick they can.

Shit-kicking stomp jams are abound such as "Legendary Child", "Oh Yeah", "Lover Alot", "Freedom Fighter", "Street Jesus" and "Luv XXX". Of these, "Lover Alot" has the most pep and the most drive, while "Street Jesus" and "Legendary Child" might be the biggest stretches into AEROSMITH's vintage years, albeit with a more modern luster to those songs' shaking and shimmying. "Street Jesus" gets dirty during Joe Perry's solo section and in response, Steven Tyler scats and swills at his side like nothing else matters between them other than mucking it up together.

"Beautiful" is perhaps AEROSMITH's most legitimate attempt to get out of their Nineties mode of writing with its grinding proto rawk and chunky bridges. Even the choruses slink with a near-alt sway. However, the majority of this album goes for broke by playing every chip AEROSMITH has on sure shot rolls from their past. "Out Go the Lights" becomes a distant cousin to both "Rag Doll" and "Love In An Elevator", not to mention 1977's "Draw the Line" album, complete with the swampy riffs and the ripping harmonicas. Add to the mix the familiar hump-along beat and cowbell cracks from Joey Kramer, plus the soul sista and brass backups. "Luv XXX" is a brazen rework of "Love In An Elevator" to the point of self-plagiarism. "Tell Me" surrenders to a few writhing lines from the "Rocks" era along with AEROSMITH's enduring dedication to dusty slide refrains spread throughout their more contemporary albums. Oddly enough, AEROSMITH comes off more like CANDLEBOX than themselves on "Tell Me". You may or may not consider that a renovation of their product.

The ballads are likewise plentiful and likewise reminiscent of AEROSMITH's Eighties and Nineties' most memorable love ditties, as if they felt a need to replicate "Crazy", "Angel" and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing". This time we get "What Could Have Been Love", "Another Last Goodbye" and the gimmicky southern-fried duet with Carrie Underwood, "Can't Stop Lovin' You". Even "We All Fall Down" comes off like a moody amalgam between "Angel" and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing". At least Steven Tyler reaches back into high-reaching pipes he might've thought were lost to him after the seventies on "Another Last Goodbye". Dark as it may be on the verses, the wriggling "Closer" can't resist spicing up its choruses with a hopeful yearning which counters Joe Perry's affective six string soul coughing.

Perry also fields lead vocals on "Freedom Fighter" and the slow riding blues and BEATLES-peppered haunt, "Something", which at least shows AEROSMITH as much in a comfort zone as ever to give Perry room to tinker. He might not have been granted such leniency twenty years ago since neither song is a commercial standout, yet kudos to the band for letting these experiments breathe. If anything, Perry's numbers give a little bit of credence to the album's title.

AEROSMITH didn't need to break the bank as heavily as they did on "Music From Another Dimension!" They are the Budweiser of American rock 'n roll, an automatic sell based on brand recognition and a red, white and blue ethic that smartly touches upon the happy spots of farmers and mechanics as much as the blue collars and gigolos. Credit where it's due: a band possessing their collective age and shared life experiences shouldn't be banging and swooning as effectively as AEROSMITH does today. They bring more than a posse of guests, including Julian Lennon to dub into their already slicked-up motherboard. "Music From Another Dimension!" may not be stellar, but it's stellar that AEROSMITH worries as much as they do in pointing the sharpest pistols they have in their trouper's arsenal.

Luv XXX, Beautiful & What Could Have Been Love are the only songs that stood out to me. The rest of the harder tracks are ok, but the other ballads are fucking awful, some of the blandest shit I've ever heard.

While nowhere near their 70s heyday, this album is not as bad as some would have you believe. It's reminicent of Pump and Get a Grip for sure... if you're a casual Aerosmith fan you'll dig a handful of tracks.

The ballards are barf-tastic though. I skip em every time. I was hoping for more material like Honkin' on Bobo.

ok and basicly sounds like it could have come out right after get a grip. not bad but definatlly not the old school sounding aerosmith we were led to believe we would be getting. I wish critics would stop saying it sounded like vacation or pump because it does not and those were the 2 best records they have done since they cleaned up their act. it's disappointing in the fact that in every interview the band said they listened to the fans and returned to the classic sound, aside from having the guy who produced those records there is nothing on it except maybe the perry tracks that come close.

"ok and basicly sounds like it could have come out right after get a grip."

it does, and imo, that's not a good thing, as 'Get A Grip' was a huge step down from 'Pump', even if it was perfectly acceptable.

I'm still surprised to this day that Get A Grip is Aerosmith's biggest selling album. It's pretty ordinary imo.

Hearing Legendary Child and Lover A Lot, I had some hope for this record, but in the end, Music From Another Dimension comes off as a watered down mish mash of old tricks and regurgitated lyrics. The production has no thump or body to it, leaving MFAD very one dimensional.

Luv XXX is another attempt at the Permanent Vacation days but lacks the character and drive that made songs like Hearts Done Time killer. You would think as many times as they try and mimic that song, they would play it live. The next track, Oh Yeah, is an obvious Stones homage but also is kind of lifeless. There are a number of times during this record that it just sounds like five guys jacking off in the studio. That, or they are really over-thinking this shit. Fuck, it's not rocket science. How many years have these guys had to put together a killer record? And we get Tell Me?... as track four?...

The rest of the album goes on like this; Aerosmith going through the motions. Tired licks and equally tired lyrics. The only really bright spot is Street Jesus, which should have either opened the record or at least been number two. Freedom Fighter isn't bad either, something different. But the female backing vocals are hideous and the track with Carrie Underwood... no... And the ballads in general are plodding and lame; not even in the Angel category.

All in all, very disappointing. Especially for a band who says, "We've got the goods" with regards to this album; we got Jack Douglas, this is going to be old school. Especially when the lead singer mouths off about "cartoon bands"... huh... well then, Steven, your new album got spanked by a cartoon... 5/10

But the new album is ok to me. Tyler is singing very well!

Without reading one comment after finishing reading this review, I guessed what the majority would say in my mind. As I start scrolling down, there they are. Anyone who doesn't see this album as a big improvement from Just Push Play is mentally slow.
Was everybody on here really expecting a "Toys in the Attic"? A "Rocks"? A "Get Your Wings"? I know I sure as hell wasn't. When the 80's hit, Aerosmith was a changed band. They spent much more of their music career making music like this than they have anything else. It's not a complete 180 from their debut, it's a 'fresh' sound on to what they've done before...at least that's how they see it. I would much rather Aerosmith write songs like they did in 1976, but it's not going to happen. The same people are going to wait around another 8 years for the next disc, and bitch when it sounds like "Music From Another Dimension" mixed with something 'fresh' and contemporary. Fool you once, shame on them, fool you 7 times (albums later), shame on you.
While you were all either waiting for another "Rocks" or just waiting to bash the new record, I was prepared for this type of album, and honestly...I don't mind it. It's nothing like my favorite Aerosmith tunes, but it's a step up from their last release, which I wasn't expecting, so to me; it was an alright listen.
One thing that takes this album down an extra peg, is the amount of ballad songs...JPP didn't even have as many as this record has. Tyler's vocals were never much for ballads in the first place, but they're definitely in a much more rough state today, and it shows on those slow song. All in all, it's a mediocre album and a fun listen. It's Aerosmith, not Dream Theater...just enjoy the sleaze rock play-on-word style that is Aerosmith.

It is a good record. The band is not capable of putting out their 70's style of music. That's not a bad thing. Who can replicate that many classic albums? My guess is none. Cut the guys some slack. They put out an album for us to listen to when they don't need the money or have anything left to prove. We should be grateful.

Yea, I'm older....I don't expect Aerosmith to sound the same every album, but there is a diiference between that and whatever you choose to call this hunk of junk. This is not Aerosmith anymore...If you go back and listen to the first record and go up through Draw the Line, that is the real Aerosmith...the vagabnd, rock, blues, hard rock swagger has been gone for years and this is just another example of it.

Perry's mojo and soloing and cool rhythms dissipated long ago....

On a five scale, which is the scale you use when you don't care if the industry is offended about an honest review, this record is a 3.

Therefore, the record gets 6/10.

This is a good Aerosmith record, but not a great one. You have to give them points for their age, but this does not stack up to their classics.

There are WAY too many song titles mentioned in this review. It looks like a mess and is virtually unreadable.

Why are so many bands doing 14+ songs on albums at the moment? This album would've been a lot stronger with the best 10 songs on it. I actually like it, it's taken me ages and probably 20 listens to like it, but I do now. I reckon that review is pretty spot on actually!
