1985 was the year RUSH broke mega with their pop-prog commercial juggernaut, "Power Windows". The year also represents an apparent point of no return as RUSH broke away from their spellbinding math rock rhapsodies from "Grace Under Pressure" on back through their venerable catalog.

"Roll The Bones", "Presto", "Counterparts" and "Test For Echo" comprise the better releases from what should be labeled the ongoing RUSH Light era. Just forget "2112" except in a live setting. Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neal Peart have played their roles as refined elder statesmen to the point it defies logic for them to replicate "The Trees", much as we'd salivate at such a proposition.

You're either copasetic with RUSH's recent down tempo frameworks or you're spinning "Hemispheres", "Farewell To Kings" and "Permanent Waves" with unlimited zealotry. While the deified power trio's newest offering "Clockwork Angels" resumes this present tradition of less frantic and more precise jazz-alt-prog schisms, there's a bit more of the old RUSH coming into play than has been since at least "Test For Echo".

Now don't get too giddy daydreaming about a revisit to "The Temples of Syrinx". On the other hand, RUSH does return to their conceptual writing majesty on "Clockwork Angels" to the point you almost overlook the redundant REM-like soft lofting that has pervaded their music for the past decade-plus, including 2012.

At least there's far more hammer in the mix on "Clockwork Angels", and not just from the palpable fills, triplicates and timpani of the legendary Neal Peart. The capture of Geddy Lee's thrumming bass lines haven't sparkled this noticeably at the front in a few albums, while Alex Lifeson frequently reminds why he is the most underrated rock guitarist on the planet. The swap from his luminous acoustic intro on "BU2B" to thundering electric on the track's banging verses surpasses expectation. The progressive overtures of the song in the later minutes opens channels of complex grandeur we've been desperately seeking out of RUSH for years. Thank you, gentlemen.

The storyline of "Clockwork Angels" is set as a multifaceted purpose: to bedazzle, torment and ultimately inspire a young man chasing after his dreams. In his way are cutthroats, pirates, scum and wonderlands that aren't what they seem, all presided over by the nefarious Watchmaker. Primary lyricist Neal Peart utilizes hyperbole and metaphor as a presumed warning against yeoman artists and musicians who face exploitation due to their naivet?. Hard not to think of "Clockwork Angels" thus as a warning against Big Business, much less Big Brother on "The Anarchist", "Carnies", "Seven Cities Of Gold" and the itinerant and expressive title track.

While much of "Clockwork Angels" resumes the overly patient and methodic songwriting statutes that can wrack on the nerves, the payoffs do come in abundance. The title track is one of the most expansive compositions RUSH has yet dared and yes, you may daydream of "2112" in spots, go for it. The grinding time signatures and off-kilter fusion weaving out of the aerodynamic moodiness of "Clockwork Angels" carries little of the velocity of RUSH's younger days, but it's breathtaking stuff nevertheless. Ditto for "The Anarchist", which retools the tried and true tap-along vibe that's been prevalent in RUSH as of "Hold Your Fire" and elevates the more the song takes its course. There's far more energy and world music textures sprinkled here than in say, "The Mission", exquisite as the latter track was back in 1987.

This album is one of Geddy Lee's finest vocal hours, again flagging the title cut along with "Caravan", "The Anarchist" and the energetic "Headlong Flight". Lee chimes in like the shackles are once again off but without the far flung screeching falsettos. His partners make the most of their opportunities to garnish "Clockwork Angels" inherent restraints with palettes of sonic detail and animated coloring. All three players may be working within the same ol' script for a lot of the album, but this time they make it count for most of the journey. Listen to Alex Lifeson go bonkers in his solo section on "Headlong Flight". You end up feeling happy RUSH found it within themselves to step on the gas here, making the carefree stomp guiding "Wish Them Well" more palatable, much less "The Garden" a dynamic and hummable closer.

With random blasts of heavy metal kicking their adult-oriented prog in the seat of its own pants, RUSH proves they still want it. Not that "Snakes & Arrows" or "Vapor Trails" weren't decent albums, but "Clockwork Angels" at least attempts to bridge the consecrated mania of RUSH's early days to their more reserved latter day body of work. This is a surprise album executed by dignified professionals who obviously decided a little more oomph carries the torch extra miles.

...and I may add that that was a shitty review. Neil (not Neal), Mission (not The Mission), and Presto comes before Roll The Bones......No mention of The Wreckers and all he can say about the Garden is that it's a hummable closer. I must've read about 30 reviews of this masterpiece and this is without question the worst one. I waited a while for Blabber to review this, maybe they shouldn't have.

The fact that most of your post focused on misspellings and minor details shows that you either don't care or don't disagree with the bulk of the content. Doesn't sound like a shitty review to me, just sounds like you're bitching.

This is one of their best albums in a very long time. I for one, don't listen to Blabbermouth's biased reviews. They're terrible writers and they have no idea what they are listening too. Rush is one of the greatest bands of all time and can do no wrong.

Have been listening to this album daily since it was released. Definitely their best post-hiatus album, even one of their best ever. The first few times I listened to it it almost brought tears to my eyes because I again heard lots of the old Rush that I hold so dear, while nevertheless sounding new and different. Great job, gentlemen. Just the mix could have been a little better. My wet dream: a Rush album co-produced by fellow Canadian Bob Ezrin.

best since power windows. Headlong flight is the most exciting thing i have heard by them since the big money or even new world man. It feels like 82 all over again, i was 13 and rush literally got me through the tough high school years. And this was a terrible review rife with errors and egregiously thought out. Is ray van horn new around here ?

There is not one song on CA that is un-listenable. The vocal melodies are some of the best they've ever done.

CA ranks up there with MP for best Rush album. If this album is their swan song, they are going out with a huge bang.

Nov 1st and 3rd can't get here soon enough....

this reviewer needs to stop living in the past. it is called evolving and Rush has done it their entire career. calling what they have done Rush lite because it does not sound the same as they did in 1976 is childish. you would be the first to say it all sounds the same had they not changed their sound thru the years. I love the old stuff but to dismiss what they have done since a certain record is just stupid. they are still around making great music for a reason and this is one of the best ones they have put out in a while. but previous releases are not the useless pieces of work you try to make them out to be. 10 out of 10!

This is, as many have noted, the best Rush in many, many years. So go get it.

The review is terrible, tons of errors, and to start a review by saying Rush went 'mega' with 'Power Windows'? Um, 'Moving Pictures' anyone? Listen to classic rock radio for awhile, and when Rush inevitably comes on, it's a safe bet that it's not going to be a 'Power Windows' cut that gets played. Really, this is the best guy the site can find to review this??

Gotta disagree with this. S&A doesn't get much play from me. Too folksy in some areas for my taste.

Presto and T4E, on the other hand, are amazing albums, IMO, the former being the 1st Rush cassette (hah!) I ever bought back when Show Don't Tell was making the rounds on MTV.

I also think Vapor Trails gets unfairly maligned.

"And, does ANYBODY consider Power Windows the album that BROKE Rush???"

I agree; his claim made no sense. If anything, it was Permanent Waves and then defniitely Moving Pictures which really kicked them up a notch post-2112.

Vapor Trails is a truly great release that is hampered by horrible mastering and production values. I wish that they would finally go ahead and release the fixed remixted and remastered version that is pretty much complete from what I've heard.

I actually have always viewed Power Windows as one of Rush's weakest releases. I just don't think that the songwriting on it is all that good other than stuff like Big Money and Manhattan Project for instance. I got into Rush when I was only 11 back in 1986 and the first Rush album that I bought the day it was released was Hold Your Fire in 1987. I thought that Hold Your Fire was a much better album but they went way beyond overboard with the synths and keyboards on that one and am glad that they scaled that back starting with Presto before pretty much abandoning the keys entirely recently.

This is easily album of the year. As a huge fan of everything Rush, this ranks up there with any of the classics - 2112, Moving Pictures, Hemispheres, Farewell to Kings, etc. I think I will wear this CD before they come to Philly in October! Science has proven that Rush is the best band in history. Rush proves it with every album and even more so with every live performance. Rush has been embarking on uncharted terriorty where no band has ever been near (that's right - Zeppelin, Beatles, Floyd, Stones, anyone). For them to put out this high quality level of material, live shows, and uncompromising integrity shows they are the most righteous of musical artists. All hail the most high, Rush! Hope they enjoy the top of the mountain, they earned it!

This is one of the worst and most poorly written reviews that I've read to date on Blabbermouth. This person tried to be very intellectual to a big fault throughout and clearly doesn't really know what they're talking about in terms of the history of Rush and their releases in particular. Clockwork Angels is a masterpiece of a release.

This fuckwit of a reviewer doesn't know shit. Power Windows didn't break Rush, even the most casual of fan knows that.

But Power Windows is one of my top faves. Geddy says this also, and I agree with him. It is at turns dark, vibrant and quite adventurous. They finally got their heavy use of synths right on PWindows. The songwriting is fantastic, with Peter Collins releasing them from the worry of live replication of the material. With that boundary removed the band soars.

I really like the album - it nods well here and there to the band that was RUSH in the later 1970s. Overall - a strong release and, one of the better albums of the past...15 years.

That's the first time I've ever heard 'Power Windows' referrred to as a juggernaut. In fact it is - in many fan's opinion - their weakest record to date. Also to lump 'Counterparts' in with 'Presto' and 'Roll The Bones' is a huge misjudgement. 'Counterparts' was the guitar-driven record that changed Rush's direction away from the wash of synths that dominated ' Power Windows' and ' Hold Your Fire' (another record that wasn't exactly a fan favorite, unless I'm mistaken.

Anyway, 'Clockwork Angels' is fine , but certainly not the masterpiece that this incredibly naiive and fluffy review suggests.

No better than ' Snakes & Arrows', 'Test For Echo' or ' Vapor Trails' probably ( they are all very good by most band's standards) 'Clockwork Angels' is simply Rush being Rush ( as fifty-something year olds)

First, I agree, the review sucked and dude knows fuck-all about Rush. Now...

I really thought I was going to love this record. I liked Snakes & Arrows and thought this would be better. Headlong Flight is great, kind of has some old school feel to it, so I thought I was just going to be blown away. Well, after many spins, I am not blown away. It's a good record with some great tracks, but only a few that really stand out. The album starts off slow with the plodding Caravan, which along with Carnies, shouldn't even be on the record. In fact, the first three tracks are some of the weakest on the record, which is kind of backwards and a shame.

For me, the record really doesn't get going until The Anarchist, and let me just say right now that Geddy's bass has rarely sounded better. If there is one Grade A element about this record, it's the bass guitar. Halo Effect and Seven Cities Of Gold are also strong tracks. More killer bass guitar and let me also say that Geddy's voice sounds very good in the mix. Unlike a lot of lead vocalist that have some history behind them, Geddy sounds in fine form.

The standout track for me is The Wreckers. Every Rush album, excellent or not so much, always has a classic track or two. People pan albums like Presto, Roll The Bones and Counterparts, but War Paint, Dreamline and Animate are all killer tracks. The Wreckers is Clockwork Angels' killer track. The playing is great, the lyrics are great, the chorus... the chorus gives me goosebumps. Hands down the best track on the album.

The Garden is the other standout track, however, I have a beef with this one. As good as this song is, it should be a lot better. There is, what I would consider, a mistake, or two. First, the background harmony part ("It's a measure of a life") of the chorus starts too early in the song. They should have waited for the last chorus run to start the background harmony part. My other gripe is this... the song ends with the grand epic crescendo chorus run and... where is Neil Peart? I understand the need to go back to the basics and just plod along in the groove but this section called for some amazing Neil Peart magic, something that says "This is Rush and I'm Neil Fuckin' Peart"... but no... for some reason, Neil just plods along. End of record.

Like I said, it's a good record but I'm not blown away. I would take albums like Power Windows or Hold Your Fire over this any day. However, any Rush album is usually five times better than most other bands' efforts, and this is no exception. I would give it an 8 but the absence of Neil Peart at the end of The Garden takes another point away. 7/10

I actually liked the review, Rush trivia mistakes aside. He paints an accurate picture of the AOR Jazz Prog that Rush has been hashing out lately and the complaints I have with this album (dull song writing at parts) and paints a good picture of the positives, esp the due respect to the title track.

I think some Rush fans (not all) need to chill and realize that journos aren't going to know everything about a band. I'm sure you've said some bogus shit about Led Zep or Van Halen in conversation that was uninformed, that a die hard fan would quibble with if he heard you. You just happen to not be in print on an well-read internet forum.

1. Alex is indeed an underrated guitarist: i'd take his soulful playing over Petrucci any day.

2. Geddy's voice is shot and has been for years, if not decades. listening to him try to perform the classics is painful.

he was never the best vocalist in the world, but up to the early 80s, he had a range and intensity that at least matched the intensity of the music.

flame on, Rush fanboys, but Geddy's singing has sucked for a long time. and i have seen them live and it was horrid.

Come on, be honest! This isn't by far one of their best.
Not everything the mighty Rush do is magic.

I actually rather enjoy most of the later catalog from Rush. True it's not as bombastic as their late 70s material, but who cares, Counterparts (for example) is a fantastic record start to finish.

The new one is great too, in fact probably the best since Counterparts. Like their last two records, troduction is still a little murky (I wish the could have got Steven Wilson to produce it - that would have been outstanding). However the songs and the story are great. OF course the playing is fantastic.

I would give it a 8.5. 10 would be reserved for truly classic, blockbuster records (Paranoid, Zeppelin 2, Master of Puppets, Rust In Peace...)

They shouldve played the 2112 album in its entirety in 2012. That woudlve been an awesome Rush tour. They did the Moving Pictures which was cool but 2112 wouldve been unbeatable

I think the CD is great! I love the variety of songs they have in this 12 track release, 'Clockwork Angels'. They end with a touchy-feely type song in 'The Garden'. But, throughout, there is an epic amount of emotion and feeling that is not quickly lost to the mind after listening to this fully at once.

However, let me say that I am a long-time rUSh fan and have heard their albums millions? of times, but... I think the mix is slightly Bass = heavy, which seems great, but I think the guitar needs to be a little more present, as well the toms from Neil, seem to be hidden in the mix. Other than some slight dislike of the mix, I love the album tremendously, and am sooo very glad they put so much work and technicality into this, as I feel it stands up with any...ANY great rUSh release, all indeed. peace.
