VOIVOD To Play 'Secret' Club Gig In San Francisco

Former METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted will make his live debut with VOIVOD tonight (April 4) at a "secret" show at Bourbon Street Bar And Grill in Concord, California. The band will appear under the name TARRAT and will run through a full set in preparation for their upcoming co-headlining tour with SEPULTURA. Also performing will be local Bay Area metal veterans EXODUS, who will be making their first live appearance since reuniting with vocalist Steve "Zetro" Souza in February.

TARRAT was the name utilized by Newsted and VOIVOD's Away and Piggy for their mid-'90s project which recorded a demo at Jason's Chophouse Studio that was never officially released. One of the songs completed during those sessions, "M-Body", surfaced on VOIVOD's 1997 release "Phobos".

VOIVOD's month-long North American co-headlining tour with SEPULTURA will kick off on April 18 at Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco.

Bourbon Street Bar And Grill is located at 2765 Clayton Rd. in Concord.

In other news, VOIVOD will be holding a very special rehearsal session at the legendary Plant Recording Studios on Friday, April 11. The group, who are rehearsing at The Plant for their upcoming tour with SEPULTURA, have invited school children from around the Bay Area as part of an event organized by Little Kids Rock (LKR),which brings free music classes into public schools in California, New York, New Jersey and Tennessee. LKR Executive Director, Dave Wish, said that student's, parent's, and teacher's from the program have been invited to an exclusive rehearsal session at the Plant where they will meet and interact with the band members, and maybe even jam with them.

"The kids are beside themselves with excitement," said Wish. "We at LKR are deeply grateful because the band is also donating 13 guitars for the kids (in honor of their just released thirteenth album) as well as giving us some autographed Fender Precision electric basses to sell at auction."

Commented Newsted, "Getting real instruments into young people's hands and encouraging a fun, rewarding relationship with music, is very important in today's times of school music program cuts and other deterrents. We want to help create a positive, motivational force through music for some really cool kids."
