THE GATHERING Frontwoman Wins ' Best Singer' Award At 'Muzikantendag 2006'

May 30, 2006

THE GATHERING singer Anneke van Giersbergen has another award to be proud of this year.

In March 2006 van Giersbergen — along with her band THE GATHERING — won the famous Dutch "Edison Award" in the category "Best National Music DVD" for their recently released double live DVD "A Sound Relief" and now she has walked away with "Best Singer" honors at this year's "Muzikantendag 2006" (Dutch Musicians Day 2006) held on May 27th, 2006 in Amsterdam.

Van Giersbergen received the "Devil" award, alongside other Dutch musicians like Junkie XL and Cesar Zuiderwijk (GOLDEN EARRING). The so-called "Devil Awards" — established by the Dutch Rock & Pop Institute (NPI) — acknowledges the skill of various instrumentalists and its main asset is that their peer group has voted the winners.

The "Devil," a large medal designed by CLAW BOYS CLAW singer and artist Peter te Bos, is meant to symbolize the legend of how blues guitarist Robert Johnson "crossroads" sold his soul to the Devil at the "crossroads" in exchange to become the world's best guitarist.

This year the "Devil Awards" were handed out by Koos van Dijk, former manager of famous rock 'n' roll legend Herman Brood (R.I.P.). For the occasion Koos brought a collection of paintings from Brood which was granted as bonus prizes to the elected musicians.

Dutch Devil Award winners 2005 that were presented May 27, 2006:

Best singer: Anneke van Giersbergen (THE GATHERING)
Best guitarist: Dennis Huige (RACOON)
Best bassist: Bart Geevers (PETER PAN SPEEDROCK)
Best drummer: Cesar Zuiderwijk (GOLDEN EARRING)
Best keyboardist: Pim Kops (DE DIJK)
Best DJ/Producer: Junkie XL
Best venue: 013 (Tilburg, NL)

In other news, THE GATHERING will back on the road in Europe this June after they had to cancel the first month of their upcoming leg of their European "Homelands" tour back in April due to van Giersbergen suffering an obstinate bronchial and sinus infection. The original tour dates — April 19, 2006 to May, 28 2006 — have been rescheduled for September and October this year.

THE GATHERING released their well-received album "Home" in April on The End Records.
