Taiwanese Heavy Metal Band CHTHONIC Win Top Music Prize

August 2, 2003

Taiwanese heavy metal quintet CHTHONIC (web site),affectionately dubbed "the BLACK SABBATH of Asia", won the award for "Best Rock Group" at Taiwan's 14th annual Golden Melody Awards, held Saturday night (August 2) in Taipei. President Chen Shui-bian presented the award to the Taiwanese rockers, who wore long black leather coats and dark makeup.

Before the band had joined him on stage, Shui-bian quipped, "Music is more powerful, more moving than politicians."

The 14th Golden Melody Awards — a major event in the Chinese-language music industry — was originally scheduled to be held in May, but was postponed because of the outbreak of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome),which hit hard in Hong Kong and Taiwan — home for most of the nominees. Stars from mainland China and Singapore also feature.

CHTHONIC, who have released three albums thus far, have toured Japan with DARK FUNERAL and have previously appeared in the U.S. at the Milwaukee Metalfest and Metal Meltdown festivals. The group are currently working on their fourth album, due in late 2003/early 2004.
