SHADOWS FALL Frontman On Upcoming CD: 'This Isn't Gonna Be Some Candy-Pop Bubblegum Sh*t'

SHADOWS FALL frontman Brian Fair recently spoke to Decibel magazine (web site) about the band's new deal with Atlantic Records following a three-album stint with Century Media Records. "Once we crossed the 100,000 mark on 'The Art of Balance' [the band's third album, which came out in 2002], the sharks started circling because they smelled blood in the water," he explained. "We started doing the dinners in L.A. and all that crap — and hey, we're willing to listen to anyone if they're buying dinner — but once we decided to let people know we were serious, we told them what we wanted. We had very specific ideas in mind, so that eliminated some people right off the bat — people who wanted to pick our producer, or the right to refuse a single or something."

Other labels offered more money up front, Fair said, but the band ultimately signed with Atlantic because of the creative control the deal provided. "We have control issues," Fair explained. "We want the fucking final say on everything. And they don't want some sort of 90-degree turn out of us, because they know that's like shooting us in the foot. They don't want to lose anyone we've already gained in our fanbase. And they're definitely getting a pretty fuckin' metal record, judging by what we've written so far. This isn't gonna be some candy-pop bubblegum shit. It's pretty nasty."

As it turns out, SHADOWS FALL's A&R guy is also responsible for signing P.O.D., and, according to Fair, promised to buy diamond Rolexes for each member of the San Diego God-rock quartet if their record went gold. "He ended up paying for them out of his own pocket," the singer laughed. "So all we got was the LED ZEPPELIN catalog."

"Actually, I got a double-platinum 'Slave to the Grind' record with my name on it," guitarist Jonathan Donais piped in. "Hey, I bought two copies — SKID ROW was one of my favorite bands. But it's probably the only platinum record you'll see at my house."

SHADOWS FALL are tentatively scheduled to enter the studio in September to begin recording their Atlantic Records debut. An early 2007 release is expected.
