SEPULTURA Biography Author Discusses Upcoming Book

February 11, 2013

Portugal's SounD(/)ZonE online magazine recently conducted an interview with American writer Jason Korolenko about "Relentless - The Book Of Sepultura", the only book-lenght biography to cover Brazilian/American legends' 30-year career, tentatively scheduled for publication in late 2013. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On how revealing and thorough the book will be about SEPULTURA's story:

Korolenko: "One thing I dislike about a lot of rock biographies is that they're written like long articles, packed with reprinted reviews and quotes anyone can find online. 'Relentless' will be different. My background in fiction writing means that I understand concepts like character development and story arc, and how to make the reader connect emotionally to the subject matter. So, having said that, I'm doing everything I can to make this book as revealing and thorough as possible, and the biggest challenge so far is deciding what to leave out. If it were only up to me, the book would be a thousand pages long!"

On whether to expect a clearer version of how and why Max and Igor Cavalera left SEPULTURA and the possibility of a reunion of the band's classic lineup:

Korolenko: "Max's and Igor's departures will be addressed in depth, since those events affected the band greatly, and it wouldn't make sense to leave them out. And, in my opinion, I don't think there will ever be a reunion of that lineup. SEPULTURA has always been about moving forward, not backward."

On how the author feels about SEPULTURA members after writing this bio:

Korolenko: "Everyone I've spoken to in the SEPULTURA camp has been so incredibly supportive and cool about this project. They're just normal people, very humble and respectful, not like 'rock stars' at all, and I think that's part of why their story is so inspirational."

"Relentless - The Book Of Sepultura" is described in a press relase as "an in-depth, unflinching look at every era of SEPULTURA's history, loaded with never-before-told stories and exclusive interviews with band members past and present, fellow musicians, families, friends, and fans in the inner circle."

As previously reported, former SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera is working on his autobiography for release later this year. The book is being written by British rock author Joel McIver, whose 20 books to date include "Justice for All: The Truth About Metallica", "Crazy Train: The High Life And Tragic Death Of Randy Rhoads", "Glenn Hughes: The Autobiography", "To Live Is To Die: The Life And Death Of Metallica's Cliff Burton", "Overkill: The Untold Story Of Motörhead", "The Bloody Reign Of Slayer" and "Unleashed: The Story Of Tool". The book's foreword will be written by Dave Grohl (FOO FIGHTERS, ex-NIRVANA),who was' "really thrilled" to do it, Max said during a November 3, 2011 interview with "Metal Zone" host Nikki Blakk of the San Francisco, California radio station 107.7 The Bone. "Dave's always been a great guy," Cavalera added. "He used to come to see SEPULTURA play in Seattle every time we played; even after NIRVANA got big, he would still come and see us playin little clubs." Among fellow musicians who are being interviewed for Max's autobiography are Ozzy Osbourne and Chino Moreno of the DEFTONES.
