RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE Knocked Off Top Of British Chart

The Pulse of Radio reports: One week after its surprise win as the No. 1 single in the U.K. for Christmas, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE's "Killing In The Name" was pushed off the top of the chart by "X Factor" winner JOE MCELDERRY's "The Climb", the song that RAGE beat as the result of a grassroots Facebook campaign to stop an "X Factor" winner from topping the Christmas week chart for the fifth straight year.

According to the BBC, "The Climb" sold 196,000 copies in its second week to vault past "Killing In The Name", beating that track's sales by more than 130,000.

"Killing In The Name" sold 50,000 more copies than "The Climb" the week before to reach No. 1 on the U.K. chart in a race that gripped Great Britain. RAGE donated all their royalties from sales of the song to charity and promised to play a free show if "Killing In The Name" landed the top spot.

The campaign for the RAGE track, launched on Facebook by Jon and Tracy Morter, was widely seen as a backlash against the manufactured, disposable pop promoted by shows like "X Factor" and "American Idol".

RAGE has invited "American Idol" and "X Factor" mastermind Simon Cowell to host the free "victory" concert the band intends to play next year in the U.K.
