QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE Bassist Says It Will be Hard To Choose Songs For New CD

May 27, 2003

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE plan to head into the studio after Lollapalooza and hope to have a new record nearly complete by the end of the year, according to MTV.com.

Among the tracks tentatively set to appear on the as-yet-untitled CD are the following:

01. Tangled up in Plaid
02. So High So Low
03. All That I Got
04. Everyone Knows That You're Insane
05. Paper Thin
06. Skin on Skin

"It's gonna be hard to choose [just] some of the tunes," QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE bassist Nick Oliveri told MTV. "Do you do a triple record or do you do another 14- or 15-song record? There's a lot to choose from, and you don't want to cut away too much because then it cuts out a style that the band's also good at. So to cut out too much is to cut out too much. To cut out a little would be to cut out too much. So we have to really sift through it and not rush it."

The follow-up to last year's "Songs For The Deaf" will mark the songwriting debut with the group of guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen (ex-A PERFECT CIRCLE),singer Mark Lanegan (ex-SCREAMING TREES) and new drummer Joey Castillo (ex-DANZIG).

"We've finally found players that want to stay and we want them to," Oliveri said. "We haven't had that before. It wasn't that we wanted it to be two or three people, it was that we hadn't found the right people until now. So it's gotta be better now, because bringing in guests who don't know the songs is a different thing. It takes more time with people learning stuff and showing them parts. Plus, all the newer songs are better because our songwriting just keeps improving."

Oliveri said the new material will contain elements from each of the band's albums.

"There's all kinds of guitar-heavy stuff that's similar to [1998's 'Queens of the Stone Age'], and some more melodic, poppy stuff with hooks and choruses like [2000's] 'R', and stuff that's hard, hard, hard and driving like 'Six Shooter' from 'Songs for the Deaf'. Plus there'll be stuff that will be unexpected, because we're always trying to experiment with new things so we never end up making the same record twice."
