Police: Man Says Rifle Was Present For KID ROCK

November 7, 2003

Gordon Wilczynski of The Macomb Daily reports that a 43-year-old Michigan man was arrested in downtown Mount Clemens late Tuesday when police searched his car and found an assault rifle in his trunk, which he said he planned on giving to Kid Rock.

Kid Rock, who is from Romeo and also known at Bob Ritchie, hosted a special Christmas concert at the Emerald Theatre in Mount Clemens on Tuesday.

Terry Lyons, who has prior arrests for gun charges, was arrested by Michigan State Police Troopers Sara Foster and Sam Lentine, who had stopped Lyons for driving at night with his headlights off.

Lyons pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday before 41B District Judge Linda Davis. Bond was set at $5,000 and a preliminary exam is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Dec. 7.

Lt. Dan Bateman said Lyons was charged with improper possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm while in the possession of drugs, possession of marijuana and operating a vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance.

Bateman said the gun was not loaded.

"When we stopped him and he opened the window of his car, you could smell marijuana coming out of the car," Foster said. "During a search of the trunk of the car we found an assault rifle which Mr. Lyons tried to conceal."

When asked what he was going to do with the rifle Lyons told police he was going to give it to Kid Rock, Foster said. She didn't know how and when Lyons planned on giving the weapon to Kid Rock.

Foster said she and Lentine were on routine patrol on Cass Avenue and Main Street in downtown Mount Clemens when they saw Lyons approaching. For some reason he shut off the lights to his car and kept on driving.

Foster said she turned her car around and stopped Lyons. Besides the rifle, police confiscated one-quarter pound of suspected marijuana.

"The gun was concealed in newspaper, cardboard, an orange traffic vest and a bouquet of flowers," Foster said. "The gun was definitely concealed."
