MICHAEL SCHENKER Talks About Divorcing Wife, Quitting UFO

August 10, 2004

In an exclusive interview with Classic Rock Revisited, founding UFO guitarist Michael Schenker speaks of his recent divorce and financial problems. "She wanted to stay there to make sure everything got finished, but there was nothing to finish because everything got stolen. Who knows where everything went. I didn't get anything. I ended up with a bicycle, a few shirts and a few trousers; that was it. It was basically the lowest I had ever gone." In addition to losing his possessions and marriage, Schenker also bowed out of UFO again. He explains how it went down: "What happened was that we played Newcastle and I was looking for [UFO bassist Pete Way] and couldn't find him. He was being very obnoxious again. I wanted to tell him off. At the same time, Phil Mogg was introducing me to Spike from the QUIREBOYS. I ignored him. I don't know but I might have pushed him to the side because I was looking for Pete Way. Spike head-butted me. I had a black eye and I was very pissed off about it. The next day, we played in Manchester and I decided to let them see what it would be like if I was obnoxious. I wanted to let him [Pete Way] understand that he can't be obnoxious and let the whole weight of the band depend on one person while he did whatever he wanted. I purposely became obnoxious at the expense of the audience — they were all pissed off about it. I couldn't take it anymore and I had to show the band what if feels like if I don’t hold the thing together."
