METALLICA's KIRK HAMMETT 'Down With All Things Metal' At OZZFEST 2004

August 22, 2004

Former BROKEN HOPE and current LUPARA guitarist Jeremy Wagner sent us the following report from yesterday's Ozzfest stop in Tinley Park, IL:

"I went to the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, IL yesterday and thought you might be interested to know that Kirk Hammett was in attendance. I heard he had shown up (METALLICA are doing two sold-out shows in Chicago on Aug. 27 and Aug. 28). So I went back and found him in a VIP booth overlooking stage — left of the mainstage. He was hanging with a mutual friend of mine so I made some small talk with him.

"Kirk was totally pumped to see DIMMU BORGIR, but was kind of pissed because the sound from inside the VIP booth over the side of the stage sucked, and all we could hear were keyboards. When DIMMU exited the stage, singer Shagrath walked beneath the VIP booth, and Kirk commented, 'This guy means business… I mean, look at that fucking cross [on the singer's chest]!'

"After DIMMU, Kirk decided the sound sucked up in the VIP booth and wanted to get closer to the action, so we all went down to stand on stage left next to Kerry King's rig to watch SLAYER. Kirk commented that he had not seen a full SLAYER show in ages and was stoked about it. During SLAYER's set, Kirk was constantly nodding his head and applauding. Robert Trujillo showed up, too, as SLAYER performed. After SLAYER, Kirk went backstage to hang and then came out to watch full sets of JUDAS PRIEST and BLACK SABBATH.

"Anyway, that's about it. Kirk was way cool and seems to be down with all things metal."
