Marine Talks About Jamming With GODSMACK At ROCKIN' THE CORPS Concert

April 19, 2005

Linda McIntosh of The San Diego Union-Tribune has issued the following report:

Staff Sgt. Wesley Dinwiddie is a Marine. But for one night, he was a rock star.

The crowd cheered wildly when he got on stage and played guitar with the hard rock band GODSMACK at the Rockin' the Corps concert April 1 at Camp Pendleton.

Moments before getting up in front of 40,000 people, Dinwiddie talked with rocker Ted Nugent.

"He calmed me down a bit," Dinwiddie said.

"The suspense had been tearing at me. I felt relieved to finally get on stage and show what I could do."

The day before, Dinwiddie rehearsed with GODSMACK and got to know members of the band.

"They were down-to-earth guys. They didn't talk down to me, but treated me like I was a guest member of the band," he said.

The band was among many celebrity performers, including Sharon Stone, Cindy Crawford, Heather Locklear and Marisa Tomei, who came to the base to salute Camp Pendleton Marines.

Dinwiddie, 30, won a spot in the limelight through an audition last month sponsored by the Single Marines Program on base.

When he first heard about the audition, Dinwiddie wasn't sure he was up to it. He hadn't been on stage for 10 years and never for that big an audience.
