KIM THAYIL Rules Out New SOUNDGARDEN Music And Live Performances

October 11, 2018

Kim Thayil has told Seattle Times in a new interview that more SOUNDGARDEN releases are in the works. The guitarist, who is managing the band's catalog, is working with Sub Pop on possible compilations, live albums and other unreleased material, as well as discussing potential projects with A&M.

While Thayil plans to continue making music with drummer Matt Cameron and bassist Ben Shepherd, there are no plans for them to write or tour under the SOUNDGARDEN banner as they continue to mourn singer Chris Cornell's death. "No, I don't think that's anything we'd give reasonable consideration to at this point," Thayil said. "When I say 'at this point,' I mean perhaps ever. Laughs].

He added: "I don't know really what kind of thing is possible or what we would consider in the future. It's likely nothing. The four of us were that. There were four of us and now there's three of us, so it's just not likely that there's much to be pursued other than the catalog work at this point."

Cameron, Thayil and Shepherd attended this past Sunday night's (October 7) unveiling of a commemorative Chris Cornell statue at the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) in Seattle. The life-size statue, commissioned and donated to the museum by Chris's wife, Vicky Cornell, will stand outside MoPOP's south entrance facing Fifth Avenue North. The statue sculpted by artist Nick Marras showcases the rock legend in one of his iconic poses with his signature boots, dog tag, layers and long locks.

The unveiling was followed by a hour-long screening of a 2013 SOUNDGARDEN concert at The Wiltern, captured by the Artist Den, inside MoPOP's Sky Church.

Cornell was pronounced dead on May 18, 2017 after being found unresponsive in his Detroit hotel room the previous night. SOUNDGARDEN had played a show earlier that evening.

The 52-year-old had sedatives and an anxiety drug in his system on the night he died by hanging himself. According to a completed toxicology report released by Michigan's Wayne County Medical Examiner, the drugs didn't contribute to the cause of death.

In addition to SOUNDGARDEN, Cornell sang with AUDIOSLAVE and TEMPLE OF THE DOG, while also recording four solo studio albums and one live set on his own.
