JONATHAN DAVIS Says New KORN Material Has 'Really Cool Grooves'

July 13, 2018

KORN frontman Jonathan Davis says that there are "really good ideas" and "cool grooves" in some of the early material that has been written for the band's next album.

For the last few months, guitarists James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch have been working on music for the follow-up to 2016's "The Serenity Of Suffering".

Davis, who is promoting his recently released debut solo album, spoke about the KORN creative process during a brand new interview with Metal Hammer.

"I've listened to a bunch of stuff [that Munky and Head have come up with]," Davis said. "There's been really good ideas, really cool grooves. It really doesn't start taking place until I get there and glue all the shit together with the arrangements and put my vocals on it. But they're working with different producers and we're gonna do the record and we'll see. I'm really excited for it. It doesn't suck, I know that. I'm not going, 'Go back, please.' I'm more impressed on these than I was with 'Serenity Of Suffering', so…"

Asked whether the material so far is a continuation of the KORN sound or moving in a new direction, Davis said: "We'll see. Sometimes they write it and then I start fucking with shit and it turns into something different. That's when I come in and they get all pissed off or they just get scared. I'm, like, 'See that feeling right there? That's progress. When you're feeling comfortable, no. I want you to be scared.'"

Davis recently shot down as false Internet speculation that the band is using outside writers for material for its next studio album. "We're writing everything; we're still writing our own music," he said.

KORN will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of the group's classic third album, "Follow The Leader", by playing three U.S. concerts at the end of the summer. The shows will take place on September 12 at the Masonic in San Francisco, September 13 at the Palladium in Los Angeles, and September 15 at the Pearl Theater in Las Vegas.

KORN plans to embark on a full tour of some kind in 2019, although no further details have been revealed.
