JASON NEWSTED Says He Is Looking Forward To Doing Double Duty On OZZFEST 2003

April 21, 2003

Former METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted recently spoke to Billboard.com about the prospect of doing double duty on the forthcoming Ozzfest 2003 tour, which will include appearances by OZZY OSBOURNE and VOIVOD, both of which feature Newsted in their ranks.

"I'm definitely looking forward to it," he said. "I know it is going to be a lot of work, but it is something that you can't let pass you by. Now, I have one foot into the biggest rock enterprise in the world, and one foot into the coolest underground band of the world. So, it's a good place to be."

VOIVOD have just kicked off a month-long North American tour with SEPULTURA, and are scheduled to play Anaheim, California tonight (April 21). Newsted, who is set to join Osbourne and company in mid-May to begin rehearsals for Ozzfest 2003, says that he is enjoying the intimacy of the band's current club tour.

"Being able to see everybody's eyes, being able to see everybody's reaction to what takes place in the intimacy of it, it is fantastic," Newsted said. "When the ceiling is sweating and it's just 'Brrrrrraaaa,' that's the real deal. It helps you remember why you are doing it. So, we get the best of both worlds this year. We get to go out in front of huge crowds, and we get to see these intimate crowds at the same time. Most of these rooms will be packed and the energy will be there — that's all that matters. There could be 10 people and it doesn't matter. If the energy is there, then we're good."
