INSANE CLOWN POSSE Clothing 'Banned' In Wyoming District
November 19, 2003Andrea Falkenhagen of the Casper Star-Tribune is reporting that Natrona County students and school district administrator Wayne Beatty have come up with what Beatty calls a compromise regarding the district's dress-code policy.
However, some students still fear the policy is unfair.
The meetings between district officials and interested students stem from an outcry raised by students who identify with the INSANE CLOWN POSSE, a musical group whose associated apparel has been banned in Casper-area schools since last April.
The INSANE CLOWN POSSE is a shock-rock/rap musical group that has a "fairly substantial" fan base in Casper, said Beatty. The group and its fans are often identified by "evil clown" and "hatchetman" symbols, as well as by particular brands of clothing, like the baggy, JNCO-brand jeans.
The compromise Beatty described involves banning any clothing that directly makes reference to INSANE CLOWN POSSE, while allowing brands of clothing like JNCO.
The suicide of 18-year-old Roosevelt High School student and INSANE CLOWN POSSE fan Shawn Fochtman in October brought new attention to the issue, and many students are under the impression the dress code was changed due to Fochtman's death.
Originally, the clothing was banned under the district's regulation that prohibits any apparel affiliated with a gang. Since then, however, Beatty has apologized for calling INSANE CLOWN POSSE a "gang," and he says the apparel is banned because it is "disruptive." Read more.
