GREAT WHITE To Perform At Firewater Bar & Grill In Dallas
September 25, 2004GREAT WHITE singer Jack Russell recently spoke to Star-Telegram.com about the irony that Russell's band is performing at the Firewater Bar & Grill in Dallas on Saturday (Sept. 25). It is a reminder of what happened on Feb. 20 last year, when a fire, started by a pyrotechnic effect gone awry, swept through the Station nightclub in Rhode Island, killing nearly 100 people (including band guitarist Ty Longley) and injuring 200 others.
"What are you going to do?" the singer says when told where GREAT WHITE's playing. "People can connect it if they want and try to find some correlation, but it has nothing to do with us."
Booking agents, he says, make those decisions, not the band.
A manager of the venue says when the club made a bid for the band, they weren't trying to make light of what happened or to cash in on the tragedy; they're just trying to book like-minded bands.
"We've had pretty good luck with '80s metal bands," says club manager Rick Ondo. "We've had DOKKEN, L.A. GUNS here, and a nice chunk of people showed up to see them. It's obvious that it's a bit ironic that GREAT WHITE is playing here, but it's nothing to joke about."
Ondo also points out that the band will not be using pyro and that the stage is outside.
"It's quite different than the venue they played in Rhode Island," he says. "And a much different atmosphere." Read more.
